The town frames a beautiful crescent bay protected by a 1.6 mile-long breakwater wall, creating a perfect playground for all kinds of watersports. Frequent outrigger canoe regattas race on the bay's calm waters; teams practice daily. In earlier times Hilo was a bustling port. Today downtown's historic waterfront district is home to landmark buildings, several museums, cultural and interpretive centers, and lots of green space.
A constant stream of performances and events spread throughout the downtown area, including popular monthly First Friday evening festivals, the annual Merrie Monarch Celebration of Hula in April, Black & White Night (a HUGE multi-block street party) on the first Friday in November, and ongoing concerts and theater arts. The Palace, a 1920's Art Deco theater, shows movies on it's big screen and often offers live performances on-stage.
