DescriptionFinished in 1735, Christ Church is the best preserved and most finely crafted of colonial Virginia's Anglican parish churches. The church was built by Robert "King" Carter, the wealthiest and most powerful planter in colonial Virginia. The classical entablature, sandstone trim, and refined brickwork, particularly the molded-brick doorways, distinguish the exterior. The interior includes the only collection of high-backed pews and one of only two triple-decker pulpits to survive from colonial Virginia. The tombs of Robert Carter and his two wives stand on the east end of the church; the marker of Robert's father, John Carter, rests in the chancel area.
