Description | The Green Briar Nature Center was founded by the Thornton W. Burgess Society, a non-profit educational organization incorporated in 1976 to carry on the pioneering conservation work of author/naturalist Thornton W. Burgess [1874-1965]. Mr. Burgess, who was born and grew up in Sandwich, went on to achieve national and international recognition for his children's stories of Peter Rabbit, Jimmy Skunk, Grandfather Frog, Reddy Fox, Hooty Owl and many others - stories that have taught a love of wildlife to generations of children. Green Briar is located on the shores of the "Smiling Pool" Pond and adjacent to the famous Briar Patch of Burgess' stories. Green Briar offers live animal exhibits, a gallery exhibit featuring Thornton W. Burgess, an award-winning wildflower garden, a natural history library, and nature trails through the adjacent Briar Patch Conservation Area. The Green Briar Jam Kitchen offers a unique experience for visitors. The Jam Kitchen has been producing jams, jellies and relishes since 1903 using traditional methods and fresh produce. Proceeds from the sale of kitchen products as well as a variety of nature-related books, items and toys in the Green Briar Mercantile support the environmental education programs of the nature center. The Jam Kitchen also conducts jam making classes for the public. The Thornton Burgess Society and Green Briar Nature Center are now part of the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History, which will allow an expansion of programs to create one of the finest regional nature centers in New England. |
