Description | Some very interesting, and historic, places to check out in Maine. Sites are: the Kennebec Arsenal in Augusta, Swan Island near Richmond, and Fort Baldwin in Phippsburg. The Kennebec Arsenal is a complex of several stately stone buildings that date back to the 1830s. Swan Island (the former town of Perkins) is accessible by boat trip from Richmond (make arrangements with the Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, 207-547-5322), and has hiking trails and several long-abandoned homes (there is a small day-use fee). Fort Baldwin, up on a hill above Fort Popham (its more well-known neighbor) has shore batteries that were active during both world wars. All of these places can be explored via easy walks. Great family fun! |
