DescriptionGeorgetown/Scott County Tourism - Kentucky in Georgetown, KY

Located just north of the crossroads of I-75 and I-64, Georgetown and Scott County is ideally located 10 miles north of Lexington, the Horse Capital of the World." Georgetown was founded in 1790 by the Baptist minister Elijah Craig. The Reverend Craig is perhaps best known for his world famous invention, "bourbon" whiskey. In 1789, the Reverend Craig is said to have produced a new taste in whiskey by using corn, rye, and barley malt and letting it age in charred barrels. Although bourbon is no longer produced in Georgetown or Scott County, Kentucky remains the leading producer of whiskey in the United States.

We invite you to take just a few hours or a few days to explore Scott County...and discover for yourself what makes us uniquely Kentucky. Our back roads offer beautiful horse farms, Irish fieldstone fences, the meandering Elkhorn and Eagle Creeks and rolling fields of tobacco and cattle. The North Fork of Elkhorn Creek, which flows through Georgetown and Scott County, is considered one of the best small mouth bass fisheries in America. Elkhorn Creek, the inspiration for Walt Whitman’s “Leaves of Grass,” offers both canoeists and fishermen a rewarding and relaxing experience. A network of trails is being developed along the creek and its tributaries for walkers to explore the scenic and historic beauty of Elkhorn Creek. Scott County is home to several small, quaint communities like Stamping Ground, named for the buffalo herds that would gather at the salt spring and stomp the ground while waiting for water--and Sadieville, a rail stop along the Cincinnati Southern Railroad, named for Sadie Emison Pack, an honored citizen who was hostess to engineers working on the line in 1879. The charming village of Oxford features antique shops that host outdoor spring and fall antique shows at the scenic old Presbyterian Church.

Historic, downtown Georgetown--one of the most picturesque, Victorian downtown areas in Kentucky, features antique shops, a variety boutiques, and restaurants that offer the best in down home country cooking. Over 200 buildings in downtown are listed on the national registry of historic places.

Georgetown is also home to the Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Kentucky, Inc. Factory Stores of America Outlet Center, and the Kentucky Horse Park - the only park in the world dedicated to the horse.

Whatever route you take, we're sure you'll find the road that leads back to Georgetown and Scott County again and again.
