DescriptionFrom Broadway entertainment and historic lures to scenic recreation and inviting shops, Fort Atkinson offers the perfect mix of big city amenities and small-town charm. RESTORE AND RECREATE
Enjoy the series of bronze sculptures that accentuate the Glacial River Bike Trail on this scenic converted rail bed. The downtown portion connects to the city’s riverwalk with access to quaint shops and restaurants. Cycle over to 2 Rivers Bicycle and Outdoor (see pg 9) where you can rent canoes and kayaks and navigate the Bark and Rock Rivers; both of which lead to Lake Koshkonong, where fishing and boating opportunities abound. Whether your passion is fishing, hunting, camping, hiking, or just appreciating nature, visit TPF Outdoors for your outdoor needs. Stop by the historic Koshkonong Mounds Country Club (see pg 49), where golfers can enjoy lake views and a challenging 18-hole course situated near native effigy mounds. Skydiving, miniature golf, bowling, fat bike riding, snowmobiling, skiing and skating are available to adventurers and explorers of all levels.
TALENT AND TUNES
Experience a top Wisconsin attraction and a taste of Broadway at The Fireside Dinner Theatre (see pg 1), where you’ll also get a mouth-watering meal and the opportunity to shop one-of-a-kind gift shops. If live music is your forte, plan to attend our summer concerts in the park, Rhythm on the River music festival August 25th, or dine at Cafe Carpe, Mr. Brew’s Taphouse (see pg 8), and Brock’s River Walk Tavern and Grill which feature regional and national talent.
FEASTS AND FINDS
Fort Atkinson offers a variety of unique finds. Discover distinctive shops and restaurants, score a bargain at the Nasco Retail Store and stock up on locally-made meat products and fresh brats at Jones Market (see pg 11). Visit the Farmer’s Market for home grown produce, baked goods and handmade crafts every Saturday, May through October (see pg 13). Then venture on to our “feasting” establishments. Whether you’re looking for an authentic Italian restaurant, a unique smokehouse, a traditional supper club, or a hometown ice cream shop, Fort Atkinson provides many delectable options.
PRESERVATION AND PROGRESS
Fort Atkinson showcases a rich heritage through carefully-preserved landmarks and traditions. A must-see is the Hoard Historical Museum and National Dairy Shrine Museum (see pg 10), where visitors can meet a young soldier named Abraham Lincoln and learn about his role in the 1832 Black Hawk War, or discover who was responsible for making Wisconsin known as “The Dairy State.” On Memorial Day weekend, experience what life was like in the 1800’s at the annual Fort Koshkonong Rendezvous, May 26-27, at Rock River Park. This fur trading re-enactment is complete with authentic costumes, tools, food and games. Go even further back in time with a walk through Indian Mounds Park, or get a bird’s-eye view of the city from the top of the historic water tower.
FAMILY FRIENDLY
As a big little city, Fort Atkinson caters to families in every stage. The great outdoors beckon on lakes, rivers, trails and parks. Music, entertainment and shopping are convenient and affordable. Bring your family and explore. Bond with your kids over campfires and sing-alongs at Jellystone Park (see Inside Back Cover), recall the simple pleasure of a hot dog and ice cold soda at a Generals baseball game, take the slippery slide at the Family Aquatic Center, cycle the Glacial River Bike Trail in autumn (see pg 40), and snow shoe, ice skate or cross-country ski at Haumerson’s Pond in winter.
