After becoming the first Native American to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy during the First World War, Joseph James “Jocko” Clark went on to become one of the pioneers in the creation of the air navy. He earned his wings in 1925 and never looked back. He became a vocal advocate for naval aviation and an accomplished pilot. His flamboyant, aggressive, and sometimes brash personality made him an excellent “fighting admiral” for the United States during the Second World War and in the early years of the Cold War. Worshipped by his men, and despised by those who were on the receiving end of his infamous tongue, Clark excelled at the tasks placed before him. From commanding individual carriers, including the famed Fighting Lady, USS Yorktown (CV-10), to carrier task groups in Task Force 58, and eventually the Seventh Fleet after the war, Clark’s unique style saw him get the best out of his men and equipment and produced some amazing tales along the way.
