| Description | The Springwood Estate and the FDR Presidential Library stand on 290 acres in Hyde Park, New York. The estate was FDR's beloved home and elicited much longing in our 32nd President, "All that is within me cries out to go back to my home on the Hudson River. Such feeling was well deserved of such a beautiful property and since 1943 it has been open to the public for all to enjoy. Gardens, cottages, and the only National Historic Site dedicated to a First Lady can be found here, as well as the nation's first Presidential Library.
The Library, the first of its kind, was created by FDR with the intention of better preserving his papers. Most presidents either took their work with them upon leaving office or deposited them in an existing library; hidden away or a dusty footnote in some remote library. By creating the Presidential Library his papers, Presidential mementos, his own collection of books, and especially his collection of naval pictures and models could be accessed easily and better remembered by those who would come later. The National Park Service offers tours of FDR's Home, Springwood; Eleanor's home Val-Kill; FDR's retreat Top Cottage; and nearby Vanderbilt Mansion, all year, except on Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.
