The Ethnic Heritage Museum opened in 1989. The museum has six ethnic galleries with frequently changing exhibits: African American, Hispanic, Irish, Italian, Lithuanian, and Polish. These galleries represent the ethnic groups that immigrated to this part of Rockford where the city began. The Lockwood Gallery offers additional space for workshops and meetings.

In 2016 the museum purchased the Graham-Ginestra House next door which offers tour opportunities as well. The property is on the National Register of Historic Places in the U.S. This Greek Revival, Italianate architectural style jewel was once lived in by two prominent Rockford families. Today visitors can tour inside the house to view hand painted wall and ceiling murals and unique artifacts still present. The grounds include Victorian features such as an Ogee arch, flower garden and gazebo.
