| Description | Founded in 1893 and already one of the largest art museums between Chicago and the West Coast, the Denver Art Museum (DAM) nearly doubled its gallery space when the Frederic C. Hamilton Building opened on October 7, 2006. Designed by renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, the Hamilton Building consists of geometric shards flaring out like titanium flower petals. The Hamilton Building houses the Museum’s modern and contemporary, Western, African and Oceanic collections as well as three traveling exhibition galleries. The DAM's original striking North Building was designed by Gio Ponti of Italy. Its galleries showcase some of the Museum’s 69,000+ works of art from around the world, including European and American painting, sculpture, design, photography, textiles and a world-famous American Indian art collection. The Museum's collections of pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art, Asian, and architecture, graphics and design are also very fine.
Nationally recognized as a family-friendly place, the DAM offers a variety of innovative and interactive programs, including the Just For Fun Family Center, Hotspots, family backpacks, the Kids Corner, digital gallery games, art tubes and more. Daily collection highlight and architecture tours are available, and tours of many of the special exhibitions are also offered.
Coming in 2012: the DAM is the only U.S. venue to host Yves Saint Laurent: The Retrospective (March 25-July 8, 2012), which will showcase 200 of the fashion icon's creations. On October 21, 2012, the DAM will open Becoming Van Gogh. Co-organized by the DAM, this stunning exhibition will appear only at in Denver. |
