DescriptionRelive the days of steam and steel when you visit the lovingly restored Cowan Railroad Museum in Cowan, Tennessee.

We have preserved more than 160 years of railroading and industrial history with an enormous collection of photos, relics, stories and exhibits. Cowan, the depot and the town, demonstrated the vision and the will to move a mountain and build one of the most important rail lines in the country.

Outside the depot, we display a very rare Porter-type steam locomotive with a flatcar and bay window caboose from the venerable Nashville, Chattanooga, and St. Louis Railway (NC&St.L) and a historic diesel-electric switch locomotive.

Our location in historic downtown Cowan is only steps away from fine dining, specialty shopping, a restored railroad hotel, and the downtown railroad park. Other world-famous attractions are within an hour's drive from Cowan including The University of the South, Falls Mill, Jack Daniel's Distillery, George Dickel Distillery, and the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

5 StarsExcellent!I first learned about Cowan through an article in "Trains" magazine. The article dealt with the "pusher" engines stationed there, and the tunnel, South of the town. While driving through Monteagle one time, on my way somewhere else, I decided to take a small side trip to Cowan and do some photo work of my own. Although the museum was closed, I still found the site to be very quaint. Last summer, we again toured, this time, the museum was open. I spent over two delightful hours touring the facility and visiting with museum curators. It is authentic, well done, and a great source of railroad history. I later donated the copy of "Trains" to the museum and am looking forward to visiting again. Any rail buff or anyone interested in railroading should make an appointment to visit this wonderful museum.Elderly male02-08-09
