Don't Bother! | The clues were pretty fun and it should have been a good race, but the Denver race was disorganized and seemed to be trying to squeeze more money out of the racers all the time. We arrived to them encouraging us to buy drinks and food. There were no 'goody bags' or T-shirts, snacks, water, envelopes of clues, or any of the stuff I see in other urban race websites. Most people didn't know what was going to happen and the Website was vague. We had to get our clues as we went, which if you were new to these races, made it hard to strategize. It was August and about 97-100 degrees all day, but the race started at 12, probably so we could start buying drinks and get back to buy more after the race. At the start they talked for about 5 minutes they asked one question to break us into groups and 90% of the people got it right, so they clumped into one big group. Then they and sent us on our way. Many people were confused, but just started going as fast as they could. We had to buy a $7.00 hot dog to get our 3rd set of clues, non negotiable. We were also expected to buy dog treats, or a dog toy . We made 2 mistakes reading the clues ( buy dog treats for a shelter, not go to the shelter, yikes) that had us walking across town for probably 1 1/2 - 2 hours extra. The light rail was closed down that day in some critical places. There was one checkpoint in the middle of the race, but they weren't really interested in what we had done, just had a puzzle for us, the only one of the day. In fact you could have broken all the rules all day with very little accountability except the pictures at the end. We never saw any more volunteers throughout the race, only hot, disoriented, frustrated racers We made it back 2 minutes after the ending time, only to find an empty bar. It was 4:23 and the awards were presented at 4:20 so it was over. Instead of some sort of fun ending party, after they checked my clues ( not all of them) they said, "Well, you finished!" they didn't even check the dog biscuits, which was our 1 hour in the 100 degree mistake. I guess the top winning team won $100, even though the cost is $108 per team ( $150 the day of the race, thank god we got a Groupon for $50). Then we were invited to buy more drinks in the nearly empty bar. We talked to a few other teams and all had been quite frustrated but were good sports. Some people just gave up after awhile. The rules weren't well explained, so the people that thought the clues had to be done in order spent about 2 hours more than anyone else in the heat. Some people were done in 1 1/2 hours, some in 4 1/2, and literally 1/3 ( about 30 teams) dropped out. The facebook is filled with accolades for the event. Maybe I'm crazy, but I think the company has some work to do to compete with the other urban race event folks. They have a good start, but have a lot of work to do, especially getting more sponsors to reward the racers instead of trying to milk them for all the money they could get.
