A fresh addition to the FIGat7th concert schedule, the monthly City Beats shows are curated by local radio personality Anthony Valadez and provide a colorful, sonic snapshot of up-and-coming musicians. Genres include R&B, hip-hop, new jazz, Latin and indie, appealing to the eclectic palette and diverse backgrounds of LA music fans.
Toronto’s Maylee Todd was brought up in show business: her father was an Elvis impersonator, he grandfather an escape artist known as “The Great Toddini.” She brings her alluring mix of electronics and heart to the City Beats series on September 17. A performance artist as well as a singer/songwriter, Todd is a mercurial presence, so expect anything from a string quartet to an enveloping experience she calls “The Womb.”
Aaron Paar (aka DJ Destroyer) is, like so many of his brethren, not just a musician, but an entrepreneur. The longtime host of KXLU’s “Stomping Ground” is also part of the Umoja Hi-Fi Soundsystem and co-founder of Ximeno Records. He brings his mix of house, soul and funk to FIGat7th’s City Beats series September 17, opening for Maylee Todd.
Come early and stay late for great shopping, drinking and dining at FIGat7th!
Maylee Todd comes from a long line of entertainers and artists. Her father, Terry, is an Elvis Impersonator and Erlinda, her mother, a visual artist. Her grandfather was an escape artist known as “The Great Toddini,” and an early believer in UFOs (so much so that in the 1950s he told the Toronto Star his car was hit by one). So it’s no surprise that Maylee—and both her sisters—sought opportunities in the arts. Maylee’s career has included stints in indie rock collectives, soul and funk bands, and eventually solo work. Her recently released third album, “Acts of Love,” continues Maylee’s exploration into the ways electronics and live musicians can work together. The songs are filled with warmth, yearning, and cool computerized beats. Maylee is also interested in expanding the frontiers of interactive performance. “The Womb,” a project she hopes to tour, involves a string quartet and the audience lying on the floor, looking up at projected images.
Nottingham, England’s Aaron Paar has been an Angeleno since the early 1980s, and in that time has become one of LA’s most respected spinners. His signature brand of House music, soul, and funk has been heard on KXLU’s “Stomping Ground” and he is one-third of the Teflon Dons production team. Since taking the name DJ Destroyer in 2002, Aaron has enjoyed residencies in LA, New York, and Atlanta, joined the Umoja Hi-Fi Soundsystem, and co-founded Ximeno Records.
Anthony Valadez is a Los Angeles based DJ/Producer and visual artist with residencies at The Sayers Club in Hollywood and Zanzibar. His latest musical projects include official remixes for David Bowie, Local Natives and Ozomatli in addition to 2 LP releases on Plug Research. He has shared a stage with Sly Stone, Ben Harper, Doug E Fresh, Prince, Bruno Mars, Novalima and more. He can be found hosting his program on Monday nights on KCRW, Tuesday nights on Dash Radio and his weekly podcast on NTS Radio. Valadez is currently the host of Crate Diggers on FM.TV. |
