DescriptionThe present tower was built in 1859 and is the third documented lighthouse at the southern tip of New Jersey. It has always been an attention-getting landmark as well as an aid-to-navigation for mariners. Because it is adjacent to the community of Cape May Point and just two miles from the city of Cape May, it has drawn visitors throughout its history. In 1882, the Cape May Ocean Wave reported that "the gentleman superintendent in charge [of the lighthouse], Mr. Samuel Stillwell, takes pleasure in showing visitors who have the nerve and strength of limb to the top, the interior of the lantern, and explaining the interesting operations of the light. A very picturesque view of the sea, bay, and country may also be obtained from the giddy heights of the edifice." In 1897, the newspaper made it clear that a visit to the lighthouse was a requisite part of one's vacation: "One of the interesting features to Cape May summer visitors is a journey to the top of the lighthouse. Today the Lighthouse has been restored and is maintained by the Mid-Atlantic Center for the Arts & Humanities. Visitors can climb the 199 steps to the top of the tower for a panoramic view of the Cape.It is open to the public daly from April through October and weekends in the shoulder season.

5 StarsExcellent!I have been going to the lighthouse for a very, very long time, it has become a tradition, a must do for the grandchildren. What a view from the top of the lighthouse, it is fun to try to pick out our summer rental from there. Also to see the many ships crossing by as well as the beach. Don't forget the bird sanctuary as well. You can really see into it from there. It is well worth the cost, and if an old lady can do it so can you young ones. Put this on your must do list now!Elderly female12-21-11
5 StarsExcellent! The view of the Cape is one of the most underrated views on the East Coast. One of the joys of visiting the lighthouse at Cape May is how easy it is. The surrounding facilities are excellent, and you don't feel exhausted to finally meet this historic landmark face to face. Many a lighthouse simply line the coast, or sit adjacent to a generic inlet. The Cape May Lighthouse sits at "The Point", where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Delaware Bay. There are no bridges, highways or other unnatural obstructions to the local beauty. It's simply a step back in time. The entire area is sometimes taken for granted, but once you are atop the lighthouse you will instantly realize that there just might be no other pure lighthouse experience. As for the lighthouse itself, it is nice to see it in good shape, and you will meet people who care for it. It's a genuinely fine structure supported by genuinely fine people. Cape May and all of Cape May County is possibly my favorite place on earth; getting to the top of the lighthouse is an irreplaceable experience. Looking out from the top of the Cape May Lighthouse is impossible to explain; make the climb and suck it in. Don''t take it for granted. It sits at the best point in one of the most underrated areas anywhere. Middle age male12-21-11
5 StarsExcellent!Visted the Cape May Lighthouse with my neice from Chicago. She climbed all 199 steps and was very proud of herself. The views were unbelievable. It was a fun day for us. After visiting the lighthouse we just went a few steps and went on the beach for the rest of the day. We will be returning there this summer to climb the lighthouse again and enjoy the sights.Family with teenagers12-20-11

5 StarsExcellent! My granddaughter & I love to visit magnificent Cape May Lighthouse ... such a beautiful lighthouse in such a beautiful place. It's so exciting to be able to climb a piece of history & experience it for yourself. So much to learn along the way & the view from the top is amazing! My granddaughter climbed all 199 steps for the first time when she was only three ... & so began her love for lighthouse ... she was hooked at first step. :-) Our adventures together at Cape May Lighthouse even inspired a Children's Book ... soon to be released ...
