DescriptionLocated on the south bank of the Ottawa River, the Canadian War Museum is one of Canada’s most significant museums. A stunning architectural design, innovative exhibitions, diverse public programs and leading-edge scholarly content make it one of the world’s most respected museological venues for the study and understanding of armed conflict.

Permanent Exhibition — The Canadian Experience Galleries

The Canadian War Museum’s Permanent Exhibition is divided into four chronological galleries, from earliest times to the most recent military operations. A fifth gallery, The Royal Canadian Legion Hall of Honour, chronicles the history and importance of remembrance.

Visitors can explore each gallery of the Permanent Exhibition separately from a central hub, or experience them sequentially in a walk through time, across the country and around the world, from the South African veldt to the mountains of Afghanistan.

• Gallery 1. Battleground: Wars on Our Soil, Earliest Times to 1885 explores how the wars of First Peoples, the French, and the British shaped Canada and Canadians.

• Gallery 2. For Crown and Country: The South African and First World Wars, 1885-1931 surveys how Canada's contributions in these overseas wars led to a growing autonomy and international recognition, but at great cost.

• Gallery 3. Forged in Fire: The Second World War, 1931-1945 highlights how Canada's fight against dictatorships overseas transformed the country and its place in the world.

• Gallery 4. A Violent Peace: The Cold War, Peacekeeping, and Recent Conflicts, 1945 to the Present examines how Canada became a respected international player through its commitments to Western defence and peacekeeping

At the heart of the permanent exhibition, The Royal Canadian Legion Hall of Honour explores Canada's long history of honouring, and how Canadians have remembered and commemorated their military past. The LeBreton Gallery includes a collection of military vehicles, artefacts, artillery, naval and air weapons accessible to the public in a large, atrium-like wing. Memorial Hall is a place for quiet remembrance and reflection, while Regeneration Hall symbolizes the search for peace and hope for all humanity.
