McGowan Fine Art announces the opening of “The Color of Seasons” featuring paintings by Bruce McColl. The show will run from June 6 – July 7, with a reception on Friday, June 9th from 5 to 7 PM. This is free and open to the public.

Bruce McColl is known for his vibrant, lively paintings and pastels of abstracted studio scenes and landscapes, reminiscent of modern masters Henri Matisse and Hans Hofmann. In this exhibit, McColl continues working with a saturated palette, primarily in watercolor with touches of pastels or crayon.

This body of work explores his love of his ever changing environment. When McColl is not enjoying the spring and summer in New England he relishes time off in Sanibel, Florida. “For years I’ve gone farther afield to capture the variety of color, texture and compositional manifestations we find in both wild and manicured landscapes…” McColl explains. Particularly drawn to New Hampshire’s natural beauty, McColl has focused on the White Mountains and apple orchards to the south. In ‘White Birch Autumn Winds’ McColl’s flowing lines delineate the landscape, creating a vibrant topographic map of trees, bushes, and flowers. His stylized shapes and variety of color are effortlessly hint at the variety within his landscape.

During the darkest months of winter he turns to richly colored bouquets such as the painting ‘Bouquet of Roses and Lemon, Pear, Orange.’ Great care is taken to give each rose its own space defined by color blocks behind each bud. The blocking of pigments allows the eyes to jump from one space to the next, taking in each vibrant color individually. The plane of the table helps to ground the vase on its beautiful yellow and red surface. Other floral arrangements are distinguished by their swirling aqua outlines or lively, red walls.

These paintings are a reflection McColl’s personal affection towards nature. But they also trace his exploration of his medium. These newer works are lighter in color and sparer in composition than previous paintings. “They have a greater sense of structure and reliance on transparent layering, than the paintings of the recent past. I’m not sure if that is a sign of my maturity as a painter, or that I am trying to achieve more solidity and restfulness in my work,” says McColl. Either way, it is a show that is sure to usher in another colorful season in New Hampshire.

His sense of bold color holds the eye as it wanders the paths that he has walked, or the creations his hand has arranged. While being able to break down his surroundings into pure colorful abstract stokes, he brings a sense of purpose and delight to his work.

Artist Talk: Bruce McColl will be at the gallery Saturday June 17th from 11AM – 12PM for an intimate conversation about his current body of work and the stories that inspired them. He will be talking about his watercolor techniques and the array of tools that he uses. We hope you’ll join us for some quality time with a great artist and storyteller!

This exhibit will be on display at McGowan Fine Art, 10 Hills Avenue, Concord, NH. Hours are Tuesday to Friday, 10 to 6 PM; Saturday 10-2 or by appointment. Please call Julie Hamel at 603-225-2515 for more information or visit our website at
