Description | The Beaufort Historic Site is situated on two acres at the center of Beaufort's National Registered Historic District. Six authentically restored buildings come alive as docents in period dress give guided tours of 18th and 19th-century historic homes and buildings, including the oldest wood-framed Court House in the state.
Tours are also offered on the Historic Site's English Double Decker Bus where local narrators entertain with the lively legends of Beaufort's past.
Another favorite tour is of the Town's Old Burying Ground. Resting in the shade created by a thicket of majestic live oak trees, the Old Burying Ground is a fascinating place. A true historic find for Civil War aficionados - buried here together are Union Soldiers, Confederate Soldiers, Slaves, and Freed Blacks. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, its weathered tombstones chronicle the heritage of Beaufort and the surrounding coast.
All tour tickets are $12 for adults and $6 for children (free for ages 5 and under). All tours depart from the Safrit Historical Center at 130 Turner St.in Beaufort. For more information call 252-728-5225 or vist the website at www.beauforthistoricsite.org. |
