DescriptionDiscover a special part of America’s story when you visit the Augusta Canal National Heritage Area. Strike out on your own along the canal’s scenic towpath and trails Or take a guided boat tour and explore the award-winning Canal Discovery Center. You’ll learn about Augusta’s role in the birth of the Southern textile industry, the Civil War and more. History comes alive on guided tours on electric-powered replicas of old-time Petersburg canal boats. Your well-informed crew points out historic landmarks and the abundant plants and animals that call Augusta Canal home. Hour-long tours depart several times daily.

Take a hike or ride a bike on the Augusta Canal’s wide towpath and or winding trails. Try the new River Levee Trail for great views of the Savannah River. Or grab you mountain bike and head for the Singletrack Trail. Explore the waterway by canoe or kayak. Fish from the banks and watch for wildlife. Enjoy special interpretive walks and guided paddles and rides in spring and fall.

Augusta Canal is Georgia’s first National Heritage Area, and works in partnership with the National Park Service. National Heritage Areas are designated by the US Congress as places that best represent an important theme and story in American history. Augusta Canal tells the story of the Industrial Revolution in the American South. Built to harness the water and power of the Savannah River, the Augusta Canal brought textile and other manufacturing to the region in the era before, during and after the American Civil War. It is the nation's only industrial power canal in continuous use, supplying water, power and transportation since 1846.
