DescriptionTexas artist crosses the Red River for summer show at Oklahoma’s Chisholm Trail Heritage Center

DUNCAN, Okla. – A Texas State of Mind, featuring the art of Larry G. Lemons of Nocona, TX, exhibit will open July 4 – Sept. 22, 2019, at the Chisholm Trail Heritage Center in Duncan, OK.
A meet the artist reception will be 3:30 - 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Heritage Center.

As author John Steinbeck said, “Texas is a state of mind. Texas is an obsession. Above all, Texas is a nation in every sense of the word.” That quote is something Lemons proudly displays on his artist’s website, and it’s been his brand for many years.
“The icons of Texas and the great southwest make up my artistic arsenal,” Lemons said. “I have taken colorful and iconic images and wrapped them in a package that I call ‘A Texas State of Mind.’ If you look closely, you will see such universal themes as family values, patriotism, faith, humor, nostalgia and maybe more.”

Lemons and his wife Donna Rose, own and operate a gallery in Nocona. Lemons was once a dedicated photographer, having even earned his Master Craftsman title, but somewhere along the way, he switched gears to painting and also spent years teaching art to students in the public school system. It all seems to have worked out well for him. His list of shows dates back to 1998 and includes multiple awards, calendar publishing, feature articles by magazines, television and newspapers. He also has participated in the Cowboy True annual art show in Wichita Falls and has been a Texas State Artist nominee. He also had a solo show at the Booth Western Art Museum Borderlands Gallery in Cartersville, GA, and at the Kemp Center for the Arts Northlight Gallery in Wichita Falls.
His paintings are bold, like Texas, and they feature the things most people associate with the big state – armadillos, the Lone Star, rusty pickup trucks, horned toads and livestock skulls. This nationally recognized artist is also known for adding dogs to his paintings. Sometimes one, sometimes an entire pickup bed of them. His art is fun, reflecting his own personality. In 2018, he designed a billboard for the Nocona Chamber of Commerce, “Welcome to Nocona – Classic Car Capital of Texas.”
“If my art makes you smile, then I’ve done my job,” he said.
Visitors to the Heritage Center on the National Day of the Cowboy celebration will also have a chance to see “A Texas State of Mind.”
