Janet Bagnall says:

is it in the Badlands National Park in South Dakota?

Sue Oxarart says:

Devils Postpile National Monument - outside of Mammoth.  I remember going there as a kid.

Christopher Claus says:

Right On Sue.  They are basalt columns.  Formations like these are found all over the world but that yellow lichen is typical of Devil's Postpile NPS monument in California.

Clarke Outdoors, Inc says:

What an amazing formation, hope to head out there and see it some day.

Sue is right!  It's Devils Postpile National Monument - outside of Mammoth in eastern California.  The formation was created by a lava flow.  The Postpile's columns average 2 feet in diameter and many are up to 60 feet long. Together they look like tall posts stacked in a pile, hence the feature's name.
