Description of this Houston Attraction: Founded in 1922, the Houston Zoo is an exciting recreational destination and a unique educational resource serving 1.5 million guests annually. Set in a lush 55-acre landscape, the Zoo is home to more than 4,500 exotic animals representing more than 800 species. The Zoo's exhibits include Asian elephants, African lions, tigers, giraffes, okapi (forest giraffe),and spectacled bears. Stand out exhibits include the award winning Natural Encounters Building, the McGovern Children’s Zoo, Wortham World of Primates which features more than 70 great apes and monkeys, the Tropical Bird House with more than 80 birds in its free-flight rainforest aviary, and the Reptile House which is home to one of the most complete collections of venomous snakes in North America. Check the Plan Your Day kiosk when you arrive for the daily schedule of more than 20 interactive keeper chats and presentations.
