Ariel Theatre Restored Opera House
Category: Gallipolis Theatre in Ohio User Rating:
Description of this Gallipolis Activity: The Ariel Theatre is a rare old opera house, built in 1895. A snap of the fingers confirm the hall's bell-clear acoustical quality, which, in its pre-electronic age of construction depended on materials, design and contractor know-how. A beaten path called "the circuit", brought performers such as Will Rogers, Cecil B. deMille, Sarah, Sarah Bernhardt and "Dixie" composer, Daniel Decatur(Old Dan)Emmett, to the stage. Gradually live shows gave way to moving pictures. However, in 1963, the last movie was shown and the doors closed. For nearly 25 years, resident pigwons, a leaky roof and chronic neglect took their toll. Then, a visit from a local professional musician noted that, despite the mess, Ariel's acoustical quality still rang true and the Ariel's restoration began.

The Ritz Theatre in Tiffin Resorted theatre originally built in 1928
Category: Tiffin Theatre in Ohio User Rating:
Description of this Tiffin Activity: The quaint farming community of Tiffin, Ohio is home to one of the area’s true treasures. Billed as Tiffin’s “Quarter of a Million Dollar Movie Palace,” The Ritz Theatre was built in1928. This Italian Renaissance theatre was designed by Peter M. Hulsken under the direction of local owners, Dan Kerwin and Adam Ritzler (after whom the theatre was named). The vaudeville movie palace saw the end of vaudeville, glowed under the movie boom of the 40s and weathered troubled times in the 70s. After a group of concerned citizens bought the theatre in 1981, the theatre was reborn.
Amazingly, over the years the theatre’s interior had not been changed from its original form, but a major renovation was needed. In November of 1996 with a $4.3 million capital campaign, the renovation was under way. In February of 1998, The Ritz Theatre reopened and today is one of the premier historic theatres in the country.
As a non-profit organization, our mission is to entertain and enrich people by providing an historic center for creative expression, education, social interaction, and community development. We hope to communicate and promote an appreciation of theatre and a greater understanding of our heritage and culture through a diversity of programs designed to benefit the people of Northwest Ohio.
Tours available by appointment. Please call the box office. For more historical information please visit www.ritztheatre.org/history.html.
