2000 Acre Estate of Thomas Worthington

Description of this Ohio Attraction: Adena Mansion & Gardens was the former home of Thomas Worthington, the sixth Governor of the State of Ohio and considered to be the Father of Ohio Statehood. The Mansion was completed in 1806-1807 and has been restored to look much as it did when the Worthington family lived there. Situated on the remaining 300 acres are five outbuildings and formal gardens. The gardens are filled with heirloom flowers, trees and vegetables. Looking east from the north lawn, visitors can see the view depicted on the Great Seal of Ohio. The Museum and Education Center features interactive exhibits that connect people to life in Ohio in the early 1800's.

Cora Mill
Grist Mill

Category:     Rio Grande Historic Site near Gallipolis, Ohio


Description of this Gallipolis area Attraction: Cora Mill, originally built in 1835, is the last of 13 grist mills that flourished along Raccoon Creek in Gallia County. Mills such as this one, were used to grind grain into flour and sometimes, to saw logs into lumber. The mills were very important during the early settlement of an area. Not only did they grind grain, but often had stores that sold the few supplies needed by the largely self-suffient farmers. Mills served as gathering places and frequently, villages like Cora, sprang up around the mills.

Historic Bear's Mill
Bear's Mill, built in 1849, is an authentic grist mill.

Description of this Dayton area Attraction: Built in 1849, Bear's Mill is an authentic example of a stonegrinding flourmill of its time. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, it is still in use today to grind yellow cornmeal, soft whole wheat flour, cracked wheat and rye flour. The buhr stones are powered by water from the Greenville Creek. Everyone who comes to Bear’s Mill during business hours is welcome to take a free self-guided tour of the 4 story structure and take a walk in the scenic woods surrounding the mill. Guided tours may be scheduled for a fee. The first floor of the mill is a store and art gallery where one can purchase the mill flours and other gourmet sundries and giftware. The mill offers a line of gift boxes and custom baskets. A special feature is handmade pottery by the Bear’s Mill potters and artwork by regional artists. Bear's Mill is run by ‘The Friends of Bear’s Mill’ (a non profit organization whose mission is to preserve and keep the mill open to the public for touring and educational purposes). One of the sources of income for the mill is through store sales, so if you visit the mill and do not wish to make a purchase, please drop a gift in the donation box on your way out. It helps to keep the mill open for all to see. The Exhibit Hall in the Visitors Center features changing exhibits on Ohio history and culture. Ohio Valley Frontier Days celebrates our frontier heritage annually at the end of June. Fort Steuben Park offers greenspace within downtown Steubenville and summer concerts on Thursday evenings in the Berkman Amphitheater.

The Hopewell culture was centered on Chillicothe from about 200 BC to AD 400. This unique culture built geometric earthworks of various shapes as well as mounds. Their finely crafted artifacts are evidence of extensive interactions with inhabitants of areas as far apart as the Gulf of Mexico and the Rocky Mountains. These features provide insights into the political, economic, and spiritual lives of the Hopewell Culture.

Description of this Ohio Attraction: The John & Annie Glenn Historic Site is dedicated to telling the story of 20th Century American history through the lives of John & Annie Glenn and to creating educational programs for learners of all ages. The tour begins with a 20-minute orientation movie (narrated by Hugh Downs). What makes the attraction unique is the living history presentation done on the main floor of the Historic Site which is John Glenn's boyhood home. The year is 1944 and we are in the middle of WWII. Experience life on the homefront during that time and the sacrifices made at home to help with the war effort. Also, learn about their devotion to one another, their family, church, community and their country. See John's bedroom with handmade planes hanging from the ceiling and a toy room with his train set and tricycle just like they were when he was a boy and displays from his military and political careers as well as the space program, including a replica of the Friendship VII space capsule in which he orbited the earth in 1962. Visitors also have the opportunity to have a virtual conversation with John Glenn. This site is very family oriented
