Ariel Theatre Restored Opera House
Category: Gallipolis Theatre in Ohio User Rating:
Description of this Gallipolis Activity: The Ariel Theatre is a rare old opera house, built in 1895. A snap of the fingers confirm the hall's bell-clear acoustical quality, which, in its pre-electronic age of construction depended on materials, design and contractor know-how. A beaten path called "the circuit", brought performers such as Will Rogers, Cecil B. deMille, Sarah, Sarah Bernhardt and "Dixie" composer, Daniel Decatur(Old Dan)Emmett, to the stage. Gradually live shows gave way to moving pictures. However, in 1963, the last movie was shown and the doors closed. For nearly 25 years, resident pigwons, a leaky roof and chronic neglect took their toll. Then, a visit from a local professional musician noted that, despite the mess, Ariel's acoustical quality still rang true and the Ariel's restoration began.

SegAway Tours of Columbus A 2 hour tour of downtown Columbus, OH; via segway!
Category: Columbus Recreation in Ohio
Description of this Columbus Activity: Founded, owned and operated by entrepreneur David Weller, SegAway Tours of Columbus combines the comfort and novelty of Segway i2 Personal Transporters and the rich history, beautiful parks and vibrant downtown attractions of the City of Columbus. A two-hour tour with over 50 points of interest gives both residents and visiting guests an entertaining and enlightening perspective of the city, while also allowing them to experience a fun and comfortable ride on the Segway.
“Our goal is to give tourists, as well as new and long-time residents, a fresh and detailed view of Columbus,” says Weller. “And what better way to do that than on a Segway? They not only allow riders to get up close and personal with the history and appeal of Columbus, but also enable them to safely go a longer distance and see more sites and attractions.”
Led by experienced tour guides, each glide around the city includes a training session on the Segway before leaving the starting point. Tours begin and end at The Greater Columbus Convention Center, where SegAway Tours of Columbus is headquartered; at points of interest along the route, tour guides provide historic facts, stories and anecdotes about each site and attraction.
Among the 50 points of interest are locations such as the Ohio State House, Central Ohio Fire Museum, the Ohio and Palace Theaters, LaVeque Tower, City Hall, COSI and the Santa Maria. Riders will also glide through North Bank Park, Goodale Park, the Arena District and the Short North Arts District. The tour route includes additional historic markers and parks.
“If people are new to the city, or are here on vacation, the SegAway tour is really a great way to let them explore their surroundings while learning some of the history and stories that have made Columbus such a great place to be,” states Weller. “And if someone has lived here for years, we’re hoping that these tours will help him or her see our hometown in a new light.”
Tours cost $55 per rider, and should be scheduled with a reservation. Weller says interested riders can begin making reservations April 15th, with the tours starting in May. For additional requirements, questions or to make a reservation, contact David Weller at 614.222.3005 or email him at Tours@SegAwayToursofColumbus.com.

The Ritz Theatre in Tiffin Resorted theatre originally built in 1928
Category: Tiffin Theatre in Ohio User Rating:
Description of this Tiffin Activity: The quaint farming community of Tiffin, Ohio is home to one of the area’s true treasures. Billed as Tiffin’s “Quarter of a Million Dollar Movie Palace,” The Ritz Theatre was built in1928. This Italian Renaissance theatre was designed by Peter M. Hulsken under the direction of local owners, Dan Kerwin and Adam Ritzler (after whom the theatre was named). The vaudeville movie palace saw the end of vaudeville, glowed under the movie boom of the 40s and weathered troubled times in the 70s. After a group of concerned citizens bought the theatre in 1981, the theatre was reborn.
Amazingly, over the years the theatre’s interior had not been changed from its original form, but a major renovation was needed. In November of 1996 with a $4.3 million capital campaign, the renovation was under way. In February of 1998, The Ritz Theatre reopened and today is one of the premier historic theatres in the country.
As a non-profit organization, our mission is to entertain and enrich people by providing an historic center for creative expression, education, social interaction, and community development. We hope to communicate and promote an appreciation of theatre and a greater understanding of our heritage and culture through a diversity of programs designed to benefit the people of Northwest Ohio.
Tours available by appointment. Please call the box office. For more historical information please visit www.ritztheatre.org/history.html.
