A Cancer Drama by Barbara Bates-Smith
Category: All Locations Theater event in North Carolina
Description of this North Carolina Event: Her one-woman cancer drama has been called “frank, humorous and moving.” Barbara Bates Smith will perform The C-Word, a Life-Meets-Art Cancer Story, at Jubilee! Community, 46 Wall Street , Asheville , preceded by a silent auction at 2:00, and followed by a Q&A with panel members of the medical and hospice community. Smith, an award winning actor/playwright will tell the triple story of her role in Margaret Edson’s Pulitzer prize-winning stage play, Wit, her own bout with breast cancer, and the cancer experience of her friend, a hospice patient. Smith will be accompanied on dulcimer by Jeff Sebens of Cana , Virginia . The event is a benefit for Cloud Cottage Community of Mindful Living and CarePartners Hospice and Palliative Care.
Smith is best known for her off-Broadway role in Ivy Rowe from celebrated Southern novelist Lee Smith’s Fair and Tender Ladies, which led to her tours with one-woman adaptations from the works of Lee Smith. Featured in four Southeastern productions of Wit, Bates was named the 2003 Southeastern Theater Conference Best Actress. Her Confessions of a Clergy Wife, another original monologue, is slated for a national clergy convention in Chicago in June. Smith is featured in this season’s Doubt at Haywood Arts Regional Theatre in Waynesville, and in their production of Hamlet at Asheville 's Diana Wortham Theatre on April 28-29.
Panel members for the Q&A session include: Asheville psychotherapist Mollie Milner, who has provided emotional healing to cancer patients and their families by offering support groups for the past ten years; Eric Kuehn, M.D., a radiation oncologist with Mountain Radiation Oncology and medical director of Mission Hospital Radiation Therapy Department; Wanda Eichenholtz of Candler, cancer survivor; Lauren DiMaio, Bereavement Supervisor at CarePartners Hospice and musician, offering grief counseling to clients and music to address end-of-life issues.
Cloud Cottage Community of Mindful Living, 219 Old Toll Circle in Black Mountain , is a group of mindfulness practitioners from various backgrounds who meet often to meditate and study. Their root teacher is Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh of France . The silent auction, beginning at 2:00 PM, will feature services, gift certificates and fine art items.Tickets $15 at the door.
