Carnahan Memorial Garden

Category:     Jefferson City Nature in Missouri
User Rating:

Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: The garden behind the Governor’s Mansion started in the late 1930’s as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project. The WPA was created in 1938 by Franklin D. Roosevelt to employ the thousands of craftsmen and the laborers out of work during the great Depression. However, the project languished for the lack of funds and eventually sat idle. During the first term of Governor Phil Donnelly, Missouri’s first Lady, Mrs. Juanita ‘Flower’ Donnelly, was saddened by the abandoned project. She personally took it upon herself to restore the gardens. Through her efforts and supervision, the garden came to life with a goldfish pool, terraces and walkways and a sunken garden. It has been noted that it was common to see the Governor’s wife working on her hands and knees alongside inmates from the Missouri State Penitentiary. The Governor’s Garden was renamed in 2001 as the Carnahan Memorial Garden after the death of Governor Mel Carnahan. A beautiful site for relaxing and enjoying the beauty and smell of blooming flowers. Many use the Garden as a location for weddings. To reserve the Carnahan Memorial Garden, please call (573) 751-3249.

Historic Fort D
Civil War Site

Category:     Cape Girardeau Historic Site in Missouri

Description of this Cape Girardeau Attraction: In the summer of 1861 at the beginning of the Civil War, four forts were built around the strategic city of Cape Girardeau on the orders of General John Frèmont. Designed by German-American engineers from St. Louis, the forts were built by soldiers of the 20th Illinois Infantry, Bissell's Engineers of the West and local militia under the direction of Illinois Lt. John Wesley Powell, who would later gain fame as the explorer of the Grand Canyon, was detached from his regiment by the new general, Ulysses S. Grant, in order to raise a local company to man the forts. This Powell did, and his new Battery F served the forts until leaving for the Battle of Shiloh. Fort D featured as many as five cannons, the largest of which could fire a 32-pound cannon ball. The fort was manned throughout the Civil War. Of the four earthen forts only Fort D still exists, an intact survivor thanks to civic action in the 1930's. Today owned by the city, Fort D is located 4 blocks south of the intersection of Missouri Rte. 74 and Sprigg Street in Cape Girardeau, just west of the Mississippi River Bridge. The fort grounds, featuring interpretive signage are open free to the public dawn to dusk. Missouri State Museum

Category:     Jefferson City Museum in Missouri

Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: The Missouri State Museum is located on the first floor of the Missouri State Capitol Building and managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The Missouri Veterans Gallery opened in December 2007 and features a model of the USS Missouri and artifacts related to Missouri’s Veterans from 1821 to present day. The contents of this exhibit change on a regular basis to adequately cover all eras of Missouri’s military history and to display newly donated artifacts. Another new addition to the Missouri State Museum is the Civil War Cannon and Diorama. This exhibit will be set up in the museum from January 15, 2009 until 2016. It features a Civil War cannon once placed on a corner of the old Missouri Capitol. Reproduction uniforms, equipment and a natural setting complete a Civil War camp diorama. A hands-on learning area will be added in Spring 2009. In 1919, the Missouri General Assembly designated the first floor of the east wing of the Capitol as the Missouri Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Hall. Two years later, in 1921, the Missouri Resources Museum was created on the first floor of the Capitol’s west wing. The two museums were combined in 1923, and designated collectively as the Missouri State Museum. Today, the museum continues to showcase Missouri’s diverse history and resources. The museum houses both temporary and long-term exhibits, such as exhibits for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. New Civil War exhibits focus on slavery in Missouri before the Civil War and a Civil War era cannon that once sat on the Capitol grounds. One of the highlights of the museum’s collections is a significant and rare group of over 125 Civil War battle flags. Many of the flags belonged to or were captured by Missouri units on both sides of the war. At least one flag is on display at all times in the museum. Missouri was one of the most divided states during the Civil War and the Missouri State Museum exhibits tell this story. Museum staff give guided tours of the Capitol and provide interpretive programs on a variety of subjects related to Missouri’s history and natural history. The museum also is responsible for managing Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. The Missouri State Museum is open 7 days a week, from 8am until 5pm. There is no admission fee. The only days that the State Museum is closed are the 4 major holidays (New Years Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).

Other stops on the tour are the gas chamber where 40 men and women were executed, the buried cells, several housing units and the upper yard. In 1967 the Missouri State Penitentiary was infamously named the “bloodiest 47 acres in America” by Time magazine because of the incredibly high number of serious assaults on the grounds between 1963-1964. Category:     Saint Joseph Museum in Missouri

Description of this Missouri Attraction: Opened in 1858 as a luxurious hotel, Patee House is a National Historic Landmark for its role as headquarters for the Pony Express. Russell, Majors and Waddell had their offices here when they started the Pony Express April 3, 1860. Patee House served as a hotel three times, a girl’s college twice, and a shirt factory for 80 years. It has been a museum of Western history since 1965. The Hannibal & St. Joseph Railroad was the first in the nation to extend as far west as St. Joseph on Feb 14, 1859. The last Hannibal steam locomotive and railway mail car are displayed here. During the Civil War the U.S. provost marshal’s office was in Patee House. William Seward, President Lincoln’s secretary of state, once spoke to a hostile crowd from the hotel balcony. By 1865, Confederate leanings left builder John Patee short of cash and he disposed of his $180,000 hotel by lottery. He had to buy the 100 unsold tickets before the lottery could take place, and on April 28, 1865, when the winning ticket was drawn, Mr. Patee won the hotel himself. Patee House was called World’s Hotel when Jesse James was killed on the hill a block away at 1318 Lafayette street on April 3, 1882. His widow was interviewed by the sheriff here the next morning. The top floor contained Dr. Samuel Richmond’s Epileptic Sanitarium. The museum includes the “Wild Thing” Carousel, donated by its builder, Bruce White.

Soldier's Memorial Plaza

Category:     Jefferson City Historic Site in Missouri

Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: To commemorate one of the most significant and selfless acts of empowerment, inspiration, and commitment to higher education in history, Lincoln University developed, constructed and dedicated the Lincoln University Soldier’s Memorial Plaza. This monument serves as a permanent tribute to the Lincoln University founders, the brave and benevolent men of the 62nd and 65th Colored Infantries who served gallantly in the U.S. Civil War. Near the end of the Civil War, this dedicated and progressive-minded group of soldiers who served as camp laborers for Union troops recognized the need for formal education and raised nearly $6,400.00 for a school in their home state of Missouri. The soldiers of the 62nd and 65th infantries ignored racial divisions and boundaries and combined their resources to secure the initial funds for what was then known as Lincoln Institute. The presence of this memorial centerpiece on campus provides an opportunity for Lincoln University students, alumni, faculty, and friends to gather together in support and unity and also to encourage thoughtful discussions of how we can work together to further promote the mission and vision of the University.
