Gale Woods Farm

Description of this Twin Cities Attraction: Located on picturesque Whaletail Lake in Minnetrista, Gale Woods is a 410-acre park that features a working educational farm. The farm provides opportunities for visitors of all ages to enjoy experiences that enhance their understanding of agriculture, food production and land stewardship. Seasonal farm activities are the basis for public programs and scheduled group visits. Come out and explore the park on your own, schedule a visit for your group or attend one of the scheduled public programs. At these programs, your family can enjoy hayrides, meet fascinating farm animals, explore orchards, spin sheep's wool, harvest fresh garden produce, and much more. A special "Breakfast on the Farm" event is scheduled for 7:30-10 a.m., Saturday, August 20. This fun event features a farm fresh breakfast using food grown by local farmers. Activities also include sheep-herding demonstrations, hayrides, and barn and garden tours. Gale Woods Farm also offers numerous recreational opportunities. Several miles of hiking trails loop around rolling fields, mature oak and maple-basswood forests, undeveloped lakeshores and beautiful wetlands. Canoe rentals are available so visitors can paddle on Whaletail Lake. A four-season rental picnic pavilion is available for large groups. This distinctive facility overlooks the lake, pastures and gardens of the farm and can hold up to 320 people for a banquet or meeting.

Hamden Slough National Wildlife Refuge
Prairie grassland refuge known as birding "hot spot"

Description of this Minnesota Attraction: The refuge is one of 8 sites in Minnesota selected as an Important Birding Area (IBA) by the Audubon Society. It is located near the transition zone for 3 major ecosystems: tallgrass prairie, hardwoood forest and pineland. This biological diversity is highly attractive to wildlife, especially migrating birds. Still in development, the refuge attracts 225 species of birds. Refuge restoration has resulted in an explosive growth of uncommon prairie, water and shorebird species.

Description of this Minnesota Attraction: Niagara Cave is a unique, actively growing limestone cave in SE Minnesota. Recently rated one of the "top ten" caves in the United States! It has a waterfall nearly 60 feet high, a wedding chapel where over 4oo couples have been joined, several species of ancient fossils exposed on the walls and a variety of stalctite and stalgmite and flowstone formations. A one hour guided tour is offered by well trained friendly guides. A ten acre picnic grounds with pavillion is also available for your enjoyment.

Longyear Drill Site
A quarter mile nature trail leads visitors to the actual 1890 first diamond drill site of Edmund J. Longyear.

Description of this Minnesota Attraction: Longyear's steam engine drove its diamond-bitted drill to a depth of 1,293 feet. Eventually Longyear directed the exploration of over 7,000 test pit and diamond drill holes across the Mesabi Range. Equipment on site includes a Sullivan Model ""H"" Drill, which held the diamond bits that rotated to drill and core the earth, a Cameron #3 Steam Water Pump, which was used to cool the diamond bits, a Churn Buck used to drive down the drill castings, and a Vertical Steam Boiler which delivered power to the drill.
