Slim's Woodshed Home of the United States' largest Woodcarving Museum
Category: Harmony Museum in Minnesota
Description of this Minnesota Attraction: Nestled in the small town of Harmony
you'll find Slim's Woodshed,
one of Minnesota's best kept secrets
Creator and owner of The Woodshed, Stanley "Slim" Maroushek, opened it for business ten years ago in 1997. It houses a Woodcarving Museum, antique shop, gift shop with carvings for sale by various artists and different kind of wood on supply such as basswood, butternut, catalpa, tupelo and more. You can also purchase all of your carving supplies, magazines and woodcarving kits.
It's certainly not hard to find as a 15 foot chainsaw carving of Uncle Sam is there to greet you along side an 18 foot totem pole and other curious carvings.
Slims has spend the last 50 years collecting wood carvings from all over the world, from places such as Japan, Germany, Russia and almost every country on the globe. The carvings have recently been ranked as the largest single collection in the United States with over 4,000 pieces. Almost every day of the week you can view these carvings in the museum, which has recently been renovated so that the entire collection can be on display for all to enjoy. With Slim as your guide he'll make sure to point out the out of the ordinary carvings, such as the hand-carved cigarette box or the large collection of Linda Sellers carvings.
Some of the more unique pieces include Andy Anderson carvings appraised at over $10,000 and carvings given to Slim by one of the famous Bily Brothers from Spillville, IA. There is also an Ethiopian cross and many pieces donated by fellow carvers from all over the world. With so many pieces to explore, it is hard to put into words the hours of labor and love put into each one. And the show-stopper of the entire museum: The Caricature Carvers of America's hand-carved circus, a 120 piece three-ring circus with everything you remember a circus to be under the Big Top.
Some of Slim's many visitors include guests from China, Canada, Demark and Puerto Rico and their comments have ranged from "Wonderful!" to "Amazing! Can't believe it, extremely impressive collection!"
Slim's Woodshed is also host to the Southeast Minnesota's Annual Woodcarvers Workshop every June. With help from several area artists this is an experience to meet, watch and learn from the masters of the trade. Slim himself also teaches throughout the year in the Woodshed's classroom and at various shows all over the United States.
