Description of this Twin Cities area Attraction: One of the nation's best preserved Victorian-era homes, the Ramsey House offers a glimpse into family and servant life in the 1870s. Three generation of Ramseys lived the home before it was willed to the Society in the 1960s. Original family items and furnishings remain. Visitors can enjoy guided tours and special events in St. Paul's historic Irvine Park neighborhood.

The Edna G. Tugboat was built in 1896

Description of this Duluth area Attraction: The Edna G. has seen continous service at Two Harbors, MN until her retirement, except when she was seized by the U.S. Government and sent to the East coast during WW1. There she guided naval vessels and hauled supplies. In 1974 the Edna G, was designated a National Historic Site, as the only steam powered tug operating on the Great Lakes. She was donated to the City of Two Harbors after her retirement in 1981.

Description of this Twin Cities area Attraction: Discover an 1820s military outpost once the focus of a small settlement but now at the center of Minnesota's Twin Cities metropolitan area. A full living history program with costumed guides is presented daily during the summer, and on weekends in May, September and October. In addition, on Mondays and Tuesdays in the summer enjoy a variety of tours guided by the fort's expert staff. This restored stone fortress opens its gates to welcome you to frontier life. Imagine that the year is 1827, and as costumed guides greet you, that you've just arrived via steamboat up the Mississippi River. Enjoy the sights and sounds of the past. Hear musket fire, the cannon's roar and the fife's shrill tunes. Take part in the fort's everyday life. Shoulder a musket, mend clothes, smell the stew, scrape a hide or sing along with the soldiers. Take tea with Mrs. Snelling or sample the soldiers' bread ration. Swing a hammer in the blacksmith shop or barter with the sutler - but remember that his store is the only one for miles around! The Fort's costumed guides demonstrate crafts, present historical skits and practice military drill and weapons firings. Join them in 1827 or explore other areas of the site's long history in the exhibits.

Description of this Twin Cities area Attraction: Located on the scenic Minnesota River, Historic Murphy's Landing depicts Minnesota life as it was during 1840-1890. During a tour, visitors can see more than 40 historical buildings and meet face-to-face with interpreters who portray the folks who might have lived in the Minnesota River Valley during this time period. The interpreters dress in period clothing and speak about their daily lives, fears and aspirations. Visitors can try making crafts or play old-fashioned games.

Historic 1800s Gilded Age mansion

Description of this Twin Cities area Attraction: Guides lead tours that explore family and servant life in the Gilded Age mansion on historic Summit Avenue. Completed in 1891, the red sandstone residence was the setting of the public and private lives of the family of James J. Hill, builder of the Great Northern Railway. The home also offers educational programs, neighborhood tours, lectures, concerts, dramatic programs, and art exhibitions for the general public.

Description of this Minnesota Attraction: We invite you to visit the Litchfield Grand Army of the Republic Hall, a rare and carefully preserved monument to the Civil War era. The G.A.R. Hall, one of the very few left in the nation and the only authentic one remaining in Minnesota, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed by a post member to look like a military fort, the hall was built in 1885 and was the home of Frank Daggett Post #35. The hall has been preserved as nearly as possible in its original condition. Large framed photographs of early post members gaze solemnly from its walls. Battle maps and paintings offer visual testimony to the ordeal these veterans survived. The furniture, the alter and organ and even the color scheme are the same as on the day of the post's last meeting. To the rear of the G.A.R. Hall , a two-story addition houses the Meeker County Historical Society Museum. This museum displays collections that depict the diverse history of Meeker County. These include Indian artifacts, an early log cabin, a blacksmith shop, household implements, early clothing fashions, tributes to United States Veterans, and more.

Description of this Minnesota Attraction: Minnesota's State Capitol is one of the Midwest's most spectacular buildings. Inspired by the White City, a ground-breaking Italian Renaissance-styled exhibit at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair, architect Cass Gilbert was determined to build a state capitol building constructed in the classical style, but with all the modern conveniences of the time. The stunning result is a towering white marble dome, fluted columns, graceful arches and commanding statuary. Free guided tours begin daily on the hour until one hour before closing.

Description of this Rochester area Attraction: Built in 1854 Pickwick Mill is the oldest existing industrial site in the State of Minnesota. It is six stories tall, built of native stone. Has a 20 foot diameter water wheel, original mill stones, roller mills, dressers, and scales. Located in a picturesque valley it is adjacent to Lake Labelle. Offers trout fishing, picnicing, hiking, birdwatching, or lunch/diner at nearby inn.

Terrace Mill Foundation

Description of this Minnesota Attraction: A welcome stop along the Glacial Ridge Trail, the Terrace Mill Historic District features a 1903 vintage flour mill, keystone arch bridge, weir dam, mill pond, log cabin and heritage cottage. All are set in a picturesque valley along the Chippewa River. The Terrace Mill Foundation was organized to assume the management and ownership of the historic Terrace Mill. This volunteer organization sponsors events throughout the summer months in support of Terrace Mill restoration projects. A restoration fund drive is now in progress and all donations and volunteer assistance would be greatly appreciated. Contact President Richard Grella at 320-278-3253. Two Harbors Lighthouse Station
Minnesota's oldest operating lighthouse on the North Shore

Description of this Duluth area Attraction: The construction of the Two Harbors lighthouse began in 1891 and the first lighting of the light was on April 14, 1892. The Two Harbors Lighthouse was built to provide safe passage into the harbor and as a result Two Harbors was able to become the major shipping point for the iron ores of the Mesabi Range in the early 1900's. Four buildings on the lighthouse site contain artifacts and are currently open for visitors. The Fog Signal building houses artifacts from the early fishing industry and has a gift shop; the Assistant Keeper's residence has exhibits on area ship wrecks, the development of Agate Bay and a late 1800's residence exhibit. The Keeper's Quarters has been restored to the early 1900's and operates as a Bed and Breakfast; the attached light tower is open for visitors. Also, on the site is the pilothouse from the Frontenac shipwreck. The Two Harbors Lighthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Dakota City Heritage Village
A 1900 era living history village

Description of this Twin Cities area Attraction: Dakota City is a 1900 era agricultural village and museum. Twenty-two buildings in the village, including an operational blacksmith shop, newspaper office, church and school represent the business and social center of a rural 1900 era community. You can expierence live interpretation and demonstrations during living history events. There are also scheduled tours and special programs by appointment. The museum features exhibits relating to rural life as well as an extenxive collection of tractors and other agricultural equipment dating before 1950. Mountain Iron Steam Train & Overlook
See a class S-4 Baldwin switcher 1910 steam locomotive weighing 82 tons, which was last used in the Mountain Iron Open Pit in 1955. From the park gazebo view the Mountain Iron Mine that has been designated a Registered National Historic Landmark.

Veteran's Memorial Park
1st Flag Raising on Iwo Jima

Category:     Long Prairie Historic Site in Minnesota


Description of this Minnesota Attraction: The memorial park is located at the corner of Central Avenue and 1st Street in downtown Long Prairie. Army Reservist Kimberly Lawler skillfully depicted several scenes that tower to a height of five stories. At the top of which is a one and a half story steel depiction of the first Flag Raising at Mt. Suribachi. The mural details the battle of Iwo Jima, the battlefield cemetery at Omaha Beach in Normandy, France and also includes a tribute to women in the military. In the shadows of the towering mural, stationed straight and proud, are Himalayan Black Granite Walls with the names of those deceased and living in Todd County. Also at the park are the flags of all branches from the armed services, including one specially designed for women in the military. The park is available for tours and is open April 1 to November 11
