Chretien Point Plantation
1831 Cotton Plantation 15 miles north of Lafayette, LA

Category:     Sunset Historic Site near Lafayette, Louisiana
User Rating:

Description of this Lafayette area Attraction: Hypolite Chretien, who was Canadian, and Felecite Neda, who was Spanish, built beautiful Chretien Point Plantation between 1831 and 1835. The couple had been married in 1818. The mansion was the center of a thriving 3,000-acre cotton plantation located along Bayou Bourbeau. The interior of the house was designed in a manner where all of the main rooms open onto the upper and lower galleries (porches), allowing cool breezes to enter these rooms during Southern Louisiana’s tropical summers. “The War Between the States” brought hard times to Chretien Point. “The Battle of Buzzard’s Prairie” was fought on the front lawn. A Union cannonball destroyed the upper most section of the western most column of the house and there is still a bullet hole on one of the front doors. It is said that Chretien Point’s ramp knee staircase and fan light windows were copied by Hollywood for Tara in the movie Gone With The Wind. Visitors have reported seeing several different ghosts. Ghosts such as the robber shot on the stairs, both Union and Confederate soldiers, and a young female cousin who drowned in the bayou, are those that have been seen on the grounds or in the house.
