Bowling Green, Kentucky
Home of the Corvette

Category:     Bowling Green Tourism in Kentucky

Description of this Bowling Green Visitor Information entry: Bowling Green, also known as the Home of the Corvette, is located in south central Kentucky along Interstate 65 between Louisville and Nashville and just 30 miles from Mammoth Cave. The city’s nickname comes from the fact that every Corvette produced in the world today is made at the General Motors Corvette Assembly Plant here in Bowling Green. Free tours are given weekdays where you can see the step-by-step production of America’s favorite sports car. Adjacent to the Corvette plant is the National Corvette Museum which houses more than 75 Corvettes. Visit the mid-century barbershop and service station, or make a stop on old Route 66 to see the cars that shaped our country’s history. With cars in mind, Beech Bend Raceway, nationally recognized for its drag strip, also has an oval track for stock car racing. Regular races and national automotive events are scheduled March through November. Beech Bend Park is a must for families looking for fun. The amusement park offers more than 40 rides, a miniature golf course, go-carts and its newest attraction, Splash Lagoon water park. Its full-service, riverside campground has 500 campsites, many shaded. Caves run throughout south central Kentucky, but Lost River Cave is the only one that has an underground boat tour on what is claimed to be the shortest, deepest river in the world by Ripley’s Believe It or Not. The walking portion of the tour includes the human history of the Cave and Valley that dates back over 10,000 years. New this year is a butterfly habitat for visitors to enjoy. If history is of interest, Riverview at Hobson Grove is another place to visit. This elegant interpretation of a prosperous Victorian home displays outstanding Italianate architecture and artifacts of the 1860-1890 period. Another place to learn about the history and heritage of both Bowling Green and our rich commonwealth is the Kentucky Museum on the campus of Western Kentucky University. This huge museum offers award winning exhibits and exciting traveling exhibitions. Historic downtown’s Fountain Square, a touchstone to the city’s rich past, offers wonderful dining, shopping and entertainment opportunities. There are several historic walking and driving tours in Bowling Green that offer the opportunity to learn about our beautiful homes and buildings, the Civil War and our African American history. Those interested in beautiful architecture should also visit St. Joseph Catholic Church, a German Romanesque styled church built between 1870 and 1884. The church’s interior is said to have been inspired by the cathedral church of Cologne, Germany. Bowling Green offers a multitude of events throughout the year celebrating everything from our native son, Duncan Hines to international cultures, from all makes of cars to trains! To learn more about these attractions and events, along with our lodging, restaurants and shopping opportunities, call 1-800-326-7465, visit our on-line visitors guide at visitbgky.com or e-mail us at tourism@bg.ky.net for a free visitors guide to be mailed to you.

Cave City, Kentucky, Mammoth Cave Area Tourism
Cave City the "Gateway to Mammoth Cave"

Category:     Cave City Tourism near Bowling Green, Kentucky

Description of this Bowling Green area Visitor Information entry: Cave City is the "Gateway to Mammoth Cave National Park." Mammoth Cave is the second oldest tourist attraction in the United States, second only to Niagara Falls. Welcome to Mammoth cave - the longest cave in the world and one of the first tourist attractions in America. The cave boasts an incredible 350 miles of explored and mapped passageways, though geologists estimate there could be more than 600 miles in all. Mammoth Cave National Park achieved official park status from Congress on July 1, 1941, was designated a World Heritage Site in 1981, and became an International Biosphere Reserve in 1990. Since then, millions of visitors have journeyed to south-central Kentucky to experience the grandeur of this awe-inspiring sight. FAMILY FUN & ADVENTURE awaits you in the Cave City and Mammoth Cave Area, where your experiences will create memories that will last a lifetime. Family Adventure is the destination theme for millions of people who visit the Mammoth Cave Area in Central Kentucky each year. From Dinosaurs to Wild Cave Tours, there are exciting adventures awaiting families who like something different. Dinosaur World is one of the newest attractions in the cave area. This 18-acre open-air museum, sister to the original opened by Swedish immigrant Christer Svensson in Plant City, FL. in 1998, features over 100 life-size dinosaur replicas that will awe kids of all ages. Not only will your visit with the family fascinate the kids when they see a giant, 30 foot tall T-Rex, but they will also learn a lot about these giants that ruled the earth for almost 200 million years. The dinosaurs are set amid rolling hills and native vegetation, often in family groups, and their modeling and size reflect the latest scientific theories about these extinct giants. Dinosaur World is at Exit 53 off I-65. It is open every day from 8:30 am CT to dusk. In addition to the open-air exhibits, the park offers a “fossil dig” where kids can keep the prizes they find, a large gift shop, a new museum, and picnic facilities. Dinosaur World is also a favorite educational destination for teachers and school kids of all ages. For more information visit Dinosaur World at: www.DinoWorld.net. There are eight magnificent caves to visit in Mammoth Cave area and each one has its own unique formations and stories to tell. The most well known cave is Mammoth Cave, which offers seven different ranger guided tours. These tours offer adventure and challenge for families from casual tours to the advanced Wild Cave Tour, a grueling six-hour down and dirty experience that you will cherish for years. The other seven caves offer everything from boat rides, Indian artifacts, museums, and even the legend of Jesse James. Experiencing the caves is an adventure in “edutainment” where families can enjoy the entertainment experience as well as grasping the educational value. For more information on Mammoth Cave, Crystal Onyx Cave, Diamond Caverns, Hidden River Cave, Kentucky Caverns, Outlaw Cave, Lost River Cave, or Onyx Cave visit: www.MammothCave.com. Dinosaurs and caving are just warm-ups for all the other activities that are available in the Mammoth Cave region. Hiking, fishing, canoeing, boating, golf, and other outdoor recreation activities abound for families seeking adventure in nature. Take a leisurely canoe trip on Green River and enjoy the wildlife and scenery of Mammoth Cave National Park. Ride the chair lift or shuttle to the top Guntown Mountain and step back
