Life on a Kentucky Plantation

Description of this Louisville Attraction: Farmington, completed in 1816, is a 14-room Federal-style home designed from a plan by Thomas Jefferson. The 550-acre hemp plantation was home to the John and Lucy Speed family and as many as 64 enslaved African Americans. Abraham Lincoln, a close friend of Speed son Joshua, spent about three weeks at Farmington in 1841 and, in 1864, appointed Speed son James Attorney General.

Hidden River Cave & American Cave Museum
One of America's greatest cave restoration stories

Description of this Bowling Green area Attraction: Located in historic downtown Horse Cave, Kentucky (I-65, Exit 58), Hidden River Cave offers visitors of all ages an opportunity to discover the unique, fragile world of caves. A one-hour walking tours takes visitors a 150' underground where they travel along a boardwalk over the active underground river and hear the fascinating story of Hidden River Cave's restoration. For the more adventuresome, experienced guides take participants on a 2 to 5 hour wild caving tour along Hidden River Cave's upstream section. Doning helmets, these "cave explorers" visit pristine areas of the cave where they encounter eyeless crayfish and delicate soda straws. A tour of Hidden River Cave also includes a self-guided walk through the American Cave Museum, where the story of the caves and the people of Kentucky's cave region comes alive. The Museum is the national headquarters of the American Cave Conservation Association. Group rates and specialized programs for schools, scouts and church groups are avaiable. There’s plenty to do at the Highlands Museum!

Description of this Ashland Attraction: There’s plenty to see and do for all ages at Highlands Museum and Discovery Center. The Children’s Discovery Center lets pre-school and elementary school children learn while playing in exhibits like Poage Landing: Life on the River, The Front Porch and the FETCH! Challenge Lab (based on the hit PBS show FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman). The popular Country Music Heritage Hall has memorabilia of many of the famous country artists who grew up in the area. The exhibit includes the Music Quilt, an interactive wooden sculpture that lets everyone be a musician. The museum also features exhibits on topics such as the World Wars, one-room schoolhouses, aviation, and Ashland history. In addition, our newest exhibit, Digging Deeper, explores the history of the Ohio River Valley in pre-modern times.

Description of this Louisville Attraction: Locust Grove, circa 1790 tells the story of builders William and Lucy Clark Croghan, the enslaved Africans who worked on the property and Revolutionary War her General George Rogers Clark. Clark captured the Northwest Territory from the British in 1779 and resided at Locust Grove during the last years of his life. Their youngest brother William Clark and exploring partner Meriwether Lewis were entertained at Locust Grove upon returning from the Pacific. Today the 55 rolling acres include the restored Georgian house and dependencies exhibiting excellent examples of early American furniture and arts. Period-style gardens with rare and historic plants complement the landscape of woods and meadows. The Visitors' Center houses exhibits, audio-visual presentations and the museum store. Located just six miles up river from Louisville this National Historic Landmark is a unique example of early Kentucky architecture, craftsmanship and history.

Description of this Louisville Attraction: The Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft is a nonprofit organization founded in 1981 to continue the art and craft heritage of Kentucky through the support and education of craft artists and education of the public. We have been working for over 25 years by supporting over 400 artists and providing educational programs to over 500,000 school children. The Museum is funded in part by the Fund for the Arts and Kentucky Arts Council, a state agency of the Commerce Cabinet. We host about 12 exhibitions a year. Each year more than 65,000 attendees visit the Foundation. Over 2,000 students and teachers visit the Museum on field trips and more than 35,000 students and teachers access the Traveling Suitcase Program, which offers hands-on learning using real art objects in the K-12 classroom. The Education Center also provides special needs workshops, summer art camps, community center programs, school partnership workshops, Girl Scout workshops, child, teen and adult workshops, and craft artist demonstrations. The Gallery Shop features the work of approximately 200 artists at any one time, offering work in all media from folk art to furniture. The Gallery Shop offers corporate gift sales and free gift-wrapping, will work with artists and clients on commissions, and will ship to all corners of the globe.
