Springfield, Illinois Convention & Visitors Bureau Historic Places & Fun Spaces
Category: Springfield Tourism in Illinois
Description of this Springfield Visitor Information entry: Located in Central Illinois, Springfield is the perfect weekend getaway. Five nationally known Abraham Lincoln historic sites are located here, with another just 20 miles NW. Lincoln Home, Lincoln Tomb, Old State Capitol, Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices, Great Western Depot and New Salem present Lincoln's life from a young man of 22 to President-elect at age 52. He arrived in New Salem with few skills and little direction in life. He left Springfield for the White House as a learned lawyer, skilled negotiator and experienced politician, ready to lead a divided nation. Visit Springfield & follow the journey of one of our nation's most-written about figures.
The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum (www.alplm.org) opened April 19, 2005, with hi-tech, interactive exhibits that turn the ordinary museum experience upside down. Visitors can visit Lincoln as a boy in a cabin in the woods, witness the destructive effects of slavery on family life, listen to gossip in the Whispering Gallery, call on Mrs. Lincoln at the White House, witness the entire Civil War in 4 minutes, join the President and Mrs. Lincoln at Ford Theater, pay respects at the Old State Capitol where the President's casket was viewed by more than 75,000 mourners. This, and so much more, all happens within the walls of the Museum. When your Museum journey is complete, be sure to visit the actual Lincoln sites where many of the events in Abraham Lincoln’s life took place.
Springfield is also home to Frank Lloyd Wright's best preserved and most complete "prairie" style house built in 1902-1904. The Dana-Thomas House contains 100 pieces of original Wright-designed white oak furniture and 450 original art glass doors, windows, light panels, light fixtures and skylights.
Springfield is right in the heart of the Illinois portion of Route 66 and has several internationally known "Mother Road" attractions. Bill Shea's Gas Station Museum, the Cozy Drive Inn and Joe Rogers' Chili get visitors from around the globe looking for adventure on Route 66. In Illinois, all but 11 miles of Route 66 are still driveable. For a true Route 66 adventure, make plans on www.illinoisroute66.com.
The are 100s of annual events throughout the year that add to the Springfield experience, such as the International Carillon Festival, LPGA State Farm Classic, International Route 66 Mother Road Festival & Car Show, Springfield Mile National Championship Motorcycle Race, Old Capitol Art Fair, ARCA stockcar racing and many more.
Artistic and cultural events take place at Springfield Center for the Arts, Springfield Muni Opera, Sangamon Auditorium, Theatre in the Park, Prairie Capital Convention Center, Hoogland Center for the Arts and others. There are also 10 museums ranging from the Museum of Funeral Customs to the Illinois State Military Museum.
We have more than 35 hotels and several B&Bs covering a wide range of accommodation needs.
