Biscayne National Park
National Park

Category:     Key Biscayne National Park near Miami, Florida

Description of this Miami area Attraction: Its a moody place, Biscayne National Park.

Some days, Biscayne Bay's shallow waters are glassy smooth, a window on another world. Other times, the wind whistles and whips, creating white waves that bite like teeth at an angry sky.

Some days are quiet and still, the silence broken only by the sound of ocean ripples lapping at the mangrove-fringed shoreline, the exhalation of a manatee, or a crab scuttling across the leaf-strewn forest floor. On weekends, the laughter of children, the sizzle of burgers on a grill, or the "woosh" of water being cleared from a snorkel takes over.

Some days, the water over the reef is so clear that every detail on the bottom is visible, and zooming across it on a boat can seem like flying on air. Then there are blustery days when it is milky with mud stirred up by wind and wave.

Even the 10,000 year human history of the place reflects its temperamental nature. Idyllic vignettes of a Tequesta Indian man free-diving for conch from a dugout canoe, or a Bahamian woman watching the sunset across a tidal creek after a hard day's work contrast with violent shipwrecks, acts of piracy, and a long, hard struggle for environmental protection.

We invite you to use this website as a way to test the waters, and hope that you will plan a visit to immerse yourself in the many moods of Biscayne National Park.

Boca Raton Museum of Art
Art Museum

Category:     Boca Raton Art Museum in Florida

Description of this Boca Raton Attraction: Deeply rooted in the history of its city, the Boca Raton Museum of Art exemplifies the cultural impact and "ripple effect" of the arts in small towns across America. In Boca Raton, the Museum's roots reach back to the late 1940s, when a group of socially active women came together to form the town's first organization, a civic club, with the goal to build a small library. Two library board members, philanthropist Hildegarde Schine and socialite Roberta MacSpadden had been appointed to organize the Open House. They met in the 1920's Town Hall, where an estimated 1000 people flooded the Library Open House, which included an exhibition of paintings, borrowed from friends and loaned by galleries from Palm Beach to Miami. There and then, the Library Association decided they should form an organization to further this interest in the fine arts. In 1950, The Art Guild of Boca Raton was born. In 1961, construction of the first Art Guild building commenced, and in the fall of 1962, the Art Guild dedicated the building on Palmetto Park Road that the Museum occupied until January 2001, and that now houses its school of art. Growth and expansion have been steady ever since those first years. Within seven years, the building required an expansion, and three studio classrooms were added. In 1973, the Art Guild officially became a not-for-profit corporation, and twelve years later - in 1985 - changed its name to the Boca Raton Museum of Art. In 1978, the Museum hired its first full-time Director, and began a serious program of collections acquisition and changing exhibitions. By the late 1980s, the Board of Trustees began to address the need for future museum expansion to accommodate the growth of the Museum's collections. In late 1997, the Museum made a commitment to build a new facility in downtown Boca Raton's Mizner Park. As the lead initiative in the Centre for the Arts project, the Museum shares a 5.7-acre site with an outdoor amphitheater and what will eventually be a state-of-the-art concert hall. On January 24, 2001, the new Museum at Mizner Park was officially opened to the public. Just over three years had passed since the launch of Campaign 2000, and more than $13 million had been raised for the new Museum - allowing it to open debt-free. The Museum's new 44,000 square foot facility enables it to increase exhibition, education and collection galleries; to add public meeting and program areas; and to enhance fourfold the Museum's programming capabilities. It is a permanent architectural symbol of the City's pride in its past, commitment to the present, and faith in the future. In June 2001, the Museum began expansion of its Art School on Palmetto Park Road, which now includes eight classrooms, faculty/student exhibition gallery, a faculty/student lounge area, an art supply store, and a variety of support facilities.

De Soto National Memorial
National Park

Category:     Bradenton National Park near St Petersburg, Florida

Description of this St Petersburg area Attraction: On a sweltering day in May of 1539, Hernando de Soto and an army of over 600 soldiers splashed ashore in the Tampa Bay area. They arrived in nine ships laden with supplies: two hundred and twenty horses, a herd of pigs, a pack of vicious war dogs, cannon, matchlock muskets, armor, tools and rations. It was everything they would need to execute the order of King Charles V: sail to La Florida and "conquer, populate and pacify" the land.

But this expedition would never yield the gold and treasure these men so desperately sought. Instead, they marched from one village to the next, taking food and enslaving the native peoples to use as guides and porters. Hopes were dashed, fortunes squandered, and hundreds of lives lost on this calamitous journey. The de Soto expedition would change the face of the American Southeast forever, and cause Spain to drastically reevaluate her role in the New World. Ultimately, it was the first hand accounts of survivors, describing the native cultures and the richness of the land, which became the journey's enduring legacy.

The mission of De Soto National Memorial is to preserve the controversial story of this four year, four thousand mile odyssey and interpret it's significance in American history. Visitors can attend living history demonstrations, try on a piece of armor, or walk the nature trail through a Florida coastal landscape similar to the one encountered by conquistadors almost five hundred years ago.

Dry Tortugas National Park
National Park

Category:     Key West National Park near Florida Keys, Florida

Description of this Florida Keys area Attraction: Almost 70 miles (112.9 km) west of Key West lies a cluster of seven islands, composed of coral reefs and sand, called the Dry Tortugas. Along with the surrounding shoals and waters, they make up Dry Tortugas National Park. The area is known for its famous bird and marine life, and its legends of pirates and sunken gold. Fort Jefferson, one of the largest coastal forts ever built, is a central feature.

The Tortugas were first discovered by Ponce de Leon in 1513. Abundant sea turtles or "tortugas" provisioned his ships with fresh meat, but there was no fresh water-the tortugas were dry. Since the days of Spanish exploration, the reefs and shoals of the Dry Tortugas have been a serious hazard to navigation and the site of hundreds of shipwrecks.

U.S. military attention was drawn to the keys in the early 1800's due to their strategic location in the Florida Straits. Plans were made for a massive fortress and construction began in 1846, but the fort was never completed. The invention of the rifled cannon made it obsolete. As the military value of Fort Jefferson waned, its pristine reefs, abundant sea life and impressive numbers of birds grew in value. In 1935, President Franklin Roosevelt set aside Fort Jefferson and the surrounding waters as a national monument. The area was redesignated as Dry Tortugas National Park in 1992 to protect both the historical and natural features.

Tour this 1898 Historic Home

Description of this Miami area Attraction: The 1898 shingle-style home sits atop a Native American Shell Mound and contains period furnishings, clothing and artifacts. The home was built by Harry and Susan DuBois and provides a unique glimpse of life in the area at the turn of the century. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Harry DuBois was born February 10, 1871 (d. 1924), on a farm in Holmdel, New Jersey. His father, John Rue DuBois (1844-1914), and mother, Anna Douglass DuBois (1848-1928), had an apple orchard in New Jersey and grew vegetables. When Harry was 16 years old, he came to Florida in 1887 to work in an orange grove on Merritt Island (Brevard County). In 1892, he sailed into the Jupiter Inlet and noticed the Indian shell mound and liked the location. He bought 20 acres of land on what is now the Intra-coastal Waterway, and grew pineapples on 10 acres. DuBois befriended Captain Charles Carlin and became part of Carlin’s crew at the Jupiter Life Saving Station and helped him build the DuBois Home.
