The Florence Griswold Museum The Home of American Impressionism

Description of this Mystic Country area Attraction: A historic center for American art, the Florence Griswold Museum encompasses eleven acres along the Lieutenant River in Old Lyme. In addition to the original 1817 Griswold House, where the artists of the Lyme Art colony lived, the Museum features a contemporary riverfront gallery, education center, historic gardens, and a restored artist studio.

*****May Night: Willard Metcalf in Old Lyme
Metcalf's landscapes created at Old Lyme were acclaimed by critics, sought out by collectors, and provided the impetus for his reputation as a major figure in American Art. The Museum is home to the largest public collection of Metcalf artifacts. May Night emphasizes these holdings as well as loans from distinguished private collections and public institutions such as the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.

******The Allen Sisters: Pictorial Photographers of New England 1885-1920
Sisters Frances and Mary Allen created exquisite photographs of New England country life, figure and child studies, and landscapes of New England, Great Britain and California. The exhibition will compare and contrast pictorialist photography with paintings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

******The Magic of Christmas
The Museum’s alive with the sparkle and excitement of lavish Fantasy Trees inspired by exotic lands and faraway places and the holiday icon, Miss Florence’s Artist Tree. Wooden palettes painted by over 50 artists highlight this 12-foot tree.

******Impromptu Encounters with Art 1-5pm
Every Sunday visitors are encouraged to try their hand painting plein air, in the open air, just like the Lyme Art Colony artists. Painters are given brushes, palette, paint, canvas, and a smock and are sent to paint down by the river or in Miss Florence's garden. All ages and skill levels welcome. There are also hands-on art projects, books, games and puzzles to enjoy. A great way to spend the day.

Description of this Litchfield Hills area Attraction: Come to a place in the wooded hills of northwestern Connecticut, under a canopy of trees, by a stream of flowing water, to a place of peace and prayer dedicated to Mary. The Shrine of Lourdes in Litchfield, a ministry of the Montfort Missionaries since 1958, celebrates outdoor Mass at the Grotto at 11:30 each day except Mondays, from May 1 through mid-October 2008. We offer day of pilgrimages which include Mass, outdoor Stations of the Cross which wind its way through the hillside overlooking the grotto and Marian prayer. Also, shrine of St. Joseph, St. Jude, St. Louis de Montfort and St. Michael the Archangel. Gift Shop open until 4:30 and Grotto Cafe until after lunch during the season except Mondays. From mid-October through May Mass is celebrated inside the Grotto chapel on Sundays at 10:30 am and at Montfort House Chapel Monday through Saturdays at 10;30.

Description of this Litchfield Hills area Attraction: The Waterbury Symphony Orchestra is located in Waterbury, Connecticut. The orchestra performs 7 concerts during their subscription season, 4 Classical Masterworks concerts at the Naugatuck Valley Community College, and 3 Symphonic Pops Concerts at the Palace Theater. Maestro Leif Bjaland is the Music Director and Conductor. The orchestra also performs two summer pops concerts each summer, one in Woodbury and a free concert in Library Park in downtown Waterbury.
The orchestra also has numerous educational programs that are held throughout the year, including instrument petting zoos, in-school ensemble concerts, and music appreciation classes. Description of this Litchfield Hills area Event: Hunt Hill Farm invites you to “A Home Town Holiday” at The Silo Gallery, the theme of this year’s 37th annual Christmas tree beginning Saturday November 7th. View the 27 ft. towering tree decorated with hand-crafted wooden ornaments by folk artist Joy Gaiser. Adorning the tree are 21 well-known New Milford buildings, over 40 snow-capped pine trees and a moon with the silhouette of Santa and his eight reindeer at the top. Gaiser’s garland of festive picket fences and snowflakes made by 4th graders at Sarah Noble Intermediate School add the finishing touches to this spectacular tree! The New Talent Gallery will feature artist Diana Luscombe for a second year, displaying her “Healing Strokes” paintings and a new line of note cards. Sales from her “Healing Strokes” artwork exhibit will go towards a handicap accessible van for Diana. Choral singers from local schools will perform during the gallery exhibit; Dec. 5th at 1 p.m by The Devereaux-Glenholme School, Washington, CT, Dec. 12th at 1 p.m. by Sarah Nobel Intermediate School of New Milford and Dec. 19th at 1 p.m. by Schaghticoke Middle School of New Milford.
