Alcatraz Island National Park
Category: San Francisco National Park in California
Description of this San Francisco Attraction: Out in the middle of the San Francisco Bay, the island of Alcatraz is a world unto itself. Isolation, one of the constants of island life for any inhabitant - soldier, guard, prisoner, bird or plant - is a recurrent theme in the unfolding history of Alcatraz. Alcatraz Island is one of Golden Gate National Recreation Area's most popular destinations, offering a close-up look at a historic and infamous federal prison long off-limits to the public. Visitors to the island can not only explore the remnants of the prison, but learn about the Native American occupation of 1969 - 1971, early military fortifications and the West Coast's first (and oldest operating) lighthouse. The island features many natural features as well - gardens, tide pools, bird colonies, and bay views beyond compare

Black Chasm Cavern, National Natural Landmark California's newest showcave filled with pristine beauty.
Category: Volcano Tour in California User Rating:
Description of this California Attraction: Located in Amador County, just outside the quaint village of Volcano, Black Chasm opened for guided walking tours at the end of September 2000. This spectacular, living cave is decorated with a huge variety of natural formations, including profuse arrays of rare and distinctive, sparkling helictites. Part of the beauty of this cave is in how it has been developed using an ecologically friendly platform, stairs and walkway system that enhances rather than detracts from the underground experience. This attractive trail system keeps visitors off the fragile floor of the cave while affording them spectacular views.
Black Chasm was named a National Natural Landmark in 1976 by the National Park Service for its outstanding displays of rare helictite formations. On the 50-minute guided walking tour, descend a series of stairs and walkways that loop around the formation covered caverns walls. Here, flowstones interspersed with stalactites, draperies and helictites compete for space above the stairways. In the Colossal Room, a platform seemingly suspended in midair hangs above a 70-foot drop to small glimpses of the jewel-like lake below, made bright turquoise by naturally occurring calcium bicarbonate.
At the Landmark Portal, a large group of spectacular stalactites hangs over the entrance. Enter the Landmark Room for which Black Chasm was designated a National Natural Landmark and see the massive arrays of rare, sparkling white helictite crystals.
Visit the new 3,000 square foot visitors center with displays from the Matrix movie trilogy (Black Chasm was the inspiration for the huge cavern set in the second & third movies), learn about the recent exploration & mapping of the cave and browse the science, nature and souvenir merchandise.
Check out the web site for maps, directions, photos and information on our fun and educational school program.

California National Historic Trail National Park
Category: various states National Park in California
Description of this California Attraction: The California Trail carried over 250,000 gold-seekers and farmers to the gold fields and rich farmlands of California during the 1840's and 1850's, the greatest mass migration in American history. Today, more than 1,000 miles of trail ruts and traces can still be seen in the vast undeveloped lands between Casper Wyoming and the West Coast, reminders of the sacrifices, struggles, and triumphs of early American travelers and settlers. More than 240 historic sites along the trail will eventually be available for public use and interpretation.
The California Trail system (more than 5,500 miles) was developed over a period of years, and numerous cutoffs and alternate routes were tried to see which was the "best" in terms of terrain, length and sufficient water and grass for livestock. The general route began at various jumping off points along the Missouri River and stretched to various points in California, Oregon, and the Sierra Nevada. The specific route that emigrants and forty-niners used depended on their starting point in Missouri, their final destination in California, the condition of their wagons and livestock, and yearly changes in water and forage along the different routes. The trail passes through the states of Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Oregon, and California.

Dr. Seuss Traveling Sculpture Garden Dr. Seuss Traveling Sculpture Garden on display at Hotel del
Category: San Diego Arts and Craft in California
Description of this San Diego Attraction: The Dr. Seuss Traveling Sculpture Garden is currently being featured at the landmark Hotel del Coronado. For the first time, the public has unfettered access to the most famous characters created by Dr. Seuss as part of a national touring sculpture garden. The Hotel del is the first location in the U.S. to host this exciting exhibit - the 5’ and 8’ bronze sculptures will be available for public viewing at the famous Hotel del through the end of June.
The Cat in the Hat, the Grinch, Sam I Am from Green Eggs and Ham, Yertle the Turtle and the Lorax (Seuss’s groundbreaking environmental book) will be immortalized as bronze sculptures as a tribute to the literary and artistic legacy of Dr. Seuss aka Theodor Seuss Geisel.
Ted Geisel wrote 44 books between 1937 and 1990, changing the way generations of children learned to read. While his most prominent legacy is in children’s literacy, his artistic legacy continues to cross over generations and genres impacting the worlds of art, literature, pop and high culture. Many of today’s top talents pay tribute to Dr. Seuss as a key influence in their own artistic development. As Dr. Seuss said, “Fantasy is a necessary ingredient in living; it’s a way of looking at life through the wrong end of a telescope. Which is what I do, and that enables you to laugh at life’s realities.” This exhibit is in recognition of Seuss’ creative talent and an opportunity for the public to enjoy the life principals expressed and memories associated with his books and art.
