Indian Caverns Experience PA's American Indian Heritage Underground!
Category: State College Historic Site in Pennsylvania User Rating:
Description of this State College Attraction: Experience Pennsylvania's Native American heritage, local folklore, and subterranean geology.
Located on scenic Rt. 45 in the beautiful Spruce Creek valley, Indian Caverns has been in almost continuous use since the neolithic era. Serving as a winter shelter for early nomadic tribes, an important fortification and trading post for Algonquin and Iroquois settlements, and a refuge for various criminal elements in more recent times, the cave and environs are rich with local history.
Inside you will explore winding passageways and expansive chambers and see massive and intricate formations that took thousands of years to develop, as well as the mysterious "White Grotto" in which a mineral deposit glows in the dark.
Also on display are a tablet of petroglyphs and a collection of Native American artifacts found inside the cave.
Browsing in our gift shop, fish-feeding in the creek, panning for arrowheads or gems, fly-fishing, and settling into our picnic area for an afternoon lunch provide additional activities.
