Reading Public Museum A Museum of Art, Science, and Civilization.
Category: Reading Museum in Pennsylvania
Description of this Reading Attraction: If you want to see one of the largest collections of Pennsylvania German objects in Berks County, come face to face with Nefer-ii-ne an Egyptian mummy, or view millions of stars without using a telescope, come to the Reading Public Museum!
Reasons to visit to the Reading Public Museum include the Natural Science, Ancient Civilization, French, 20th Century and American Galleries. Plus, don't miss the tall case clocks, dower chests, Kentucky rifles or redware, in the PA German Gallery. Other galleries include North American Indian, Oceanic, Asian, Armor, and African.
Besides opening your mind to earthly things, broaden your experience by catching a star or laser show at the Planetarium. Call the Museum at 610.371.5850 ext. 244 to hear the current schedule.
The excitement is not just found indoors! The 25-acre Arboretum has been a gem of Berks County since the current Museum building opened to the public in 1928. It offers a peaceful environment where people come to relax, take a stroll or observe the large amount of exotic and indigenous trees and shrubs.
The Reading Public Museum's focus is to create a fun, interactive, center for lifelong learning for people of all ages. Founder, Dr. Levi Mengel, who was a teacher of natural history, was the visionary behind the Reading Public Museum. Dr. Mengel realized the importance of using 3-D objects for a “sensory education” to motivate student participation. Dr. Mengel donated 2,000 objects and specimens he obtained from the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair, which became the nucleus of the Museum's collection - many of which can be seen today throughout the Museum.
The Reading Public Museum has many things to offer everyone - your experience here will be a highlight of your trip to Berks County!
