Edgar Allan Poe National Historic Site National Park
Category: Philadelphia National Park in Pennsylvania
Description of this Philadelphia Attraction: For the most wild, yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it . . . Yet, mad am I not and very surely do I not dream. But tomorrow I die, and to-day I would unburthen my soul.
Thus the narrator begins to confess to murdering his wife in The Black Cat, just one of many fascinating creations from short story master and poet, Edgar Allan Poe.
Exploring themes as diverse as spirituality, astronomy, science and depravity, Poes writing is as powerful and arresting today as when he was first published. Poes 6 years in Philadelphia, 1838-1844, were his most productive. Not only did Poe edit and provide critical reviews for very successful magazines, but he also invented the modern detective story. While in Philadelphia, Poe penned such classics as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher and poems like The Haunted Palace and To Helen.
While living in Philadelphia, Poe went from the high of being a popular lecturer to the despair of learning that his wife Virginia was ill with tuberculosis. The brief and tragic life of the author, his times, and literary legacy are interpreted in the building that once sheltered Poe and his family.

Glencairn Museum Bringing Religion To Life
Category: Bryn Athyn Museum near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Description of this Philadelphia area Attraction: Glencairn Museum educates visitors about the history of religion, using art and artifacts from a variety of cultures and time periods. Religious life through the ages is presented by means of a remarkable collection illustrating religions as varied as ancient Egyptian, ancient Greek and Roman, medieval Christian, Islamic, Asian, and Native American.
Glencairn is the former home of Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn, built in the Romanesque style between 1928 and 1939. Prior to this time Raymond Pitcairn, who had no formal training in architecture, had supervised the erection of the acclaimed Bryn Athyn Cathedral, a Gothic and Romanesque style complex.
Glencairn, above all a home, was also designed to house Pitcairn's outstanding collection of medieval objects, many of which had been purchased as inspirational models for the craftsmen at the Cathedral. Glencairn also became a center where Raymond and Mildred Pitcairn entertained the Bryn Athyn community for musical, civic and social events. Most of these events took place in the Great Hall.
The house boasts more than 90 rooms, on 10 floors. From the basement to the tower, evidence of handcrafted care is evident - from the gentle arches of ceilings and doorways to the placement of medieval and twentieth century Romanesque architectural and sculptural additions to the structure. The tower deck offers views of Bucks, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties, with the Philadelphia skyline looming on the southwestern horizon. Placed above the deck are 8 intricately carved capitals depicting the four areas of service most important to the Pitcairn family: Church, Family, School, and Country.
Open to the public since 1981, Glencairn’s combination of intricate mosaic work, hand-carved teak balconies and doors, marble floors and oriental rugs create the feeling of a true home that reflects the interests and style of the family that lived in it.

Gloria Dei Church National Historic Site National Park
Category: Philadelphia National Park in Pennsylvania
Description of this Philadelphia Attraction: Imagine a tiny church at the edge of wilderness Before Philadelphia, there was a village named Wicaco. Before William Penn, the Swedes were here, building log homes and a church they named GLORIA DEI. Imagine William Penns Philadelphia rising Hand-hewed logs vanish in favor of locally baked brick. The Swedish log GLORIA DEI removed to be replaced by a new church, christened in brick.
Imagine the transformationtown becomes citythirteen colonies become one nation... Lutheran GLORIA DEI becomes Episcopalian The tiny church was almost lost in the nearly endless sea of tall masts standing shoulder to shoulder along a busy waterfront only yards away. The sound of a thousand hammers beating against nail and wood could be heard as new ships rose on the waterfront; modest middle class houses and shops rise opposite where there was once field and forest.
Affectionately referred to as OLD SWEDES, the memory of the long-vanished Swedish settlers is not forgotten. Now imagine OLD SWEDES in the modern worldan oasis surrounded by a sea of concrete and steel Stroll among its cemeterys weatherworn tombstones to re-discover Patriots and ordinary citizens buried side by side so long ago. Enter the tiny church and feel three hundred years of history welcoming you.

Valley Forge National Historical Park National Park
Category: Valley Forge National Park near Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Description of this Philadelphia area Attraction: The men and women of the Continental Army were ordinary men and women like many of us, but these everyday men and women were thrust into extraordinary circumstances. Valley Forge National Historical Park commemorates more than the collective sacrifices and dedication of the Revolutionary War generation, it pays homage to the ability of everyday Americans to pull together and overcome adversity during extraordinary times.
Of all the places associated with the American War for Independence, perhaps none has come to symbolize perseverance and sacrifice more than Valley Forge. The hardships of the encampment claimed the lives of one in ten, nearly all from disease. Despite the privations suffered by the army at Valley Forge, Washington and his generals built a unified professional military organization that ultimately enabled the Continental Army to triumph over the British.
Perhaps one of Washingtons soldiers said it best when he described his reasons for not abandoning the field despite the harsh conditions: "We had engaged in the defense of our wounded country and . . . we were determined to persevere." Private Joseph Plumb Martin, 8th Connecticut regiment, December 1777.
