Transportation

Located in Pittsburgh’s countryside on the Ohio border, Lawrence County is conveniently located near I79, I80, I76, I70 and SR 60. Only 50 miles north of Pittsburgh it is the perfect mix of small-town warmth and big city adventure. The New Castle Area Transit Authority runs to Pittsburgh as well as throughout the county.

The Amish Countryside in Lawrence County

  • A back road drive through the Amish Countryside of Lawrence County provides a glimpse into the life of the Old Order Amish. Watch the Amish children enjoy playtime, drive past the Amish schoolhouses and learn why “courtin’corners” is so popular with the Amish teenagers. Shop the quaint villages of Volant and New Wilmington where the Amish mingle with the English. Explore shopping as it used to be, on an Old-Fashioned Main Street. Drive through Banks Covered Bridge.
History, Heritage and Culture
  • Drive through New Castle’s historic North Hill, where you will learn about the splendid architecture of the Victorian age.
  • Visit Greer Mansion, now home to the Lawrence County Historical Society. Enjoy the displays of local history and view the Lawrence County Sports Hall of Fame.
  • The two Victorian Hoyt Mansions are beautifully decorated with period furniture from the 1920’s. Regional and national art shows are presented by the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts.
  • A must see is the Scottish Rite Cathedral, a magnificent marble structure overlooking the City of New Castle. Top named performers have graced the huge stage of The Cathedral, which also serves as second home to the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra.
  • McConnell’s Mill State Park encompasses 2,546 acres of the spectacular Slippery Rock Creek Gorge. Whitewater boating is permitted in rubber rafts, whitewater canoes and kayaks. Hike 11 miles of rugged trails that traverse the gorge. Two climbing and rappelling areas are available to properly equipped and experienced climbers. Drive through the McConnell’s Mill Covered Bridge and tour the old gristmill.
  • If exploring your heritage is of interest to you, then the Genealogical Center at the New Castle Public Library is a vital stop. The research center includes complete information on every U.S. census dating back from the first in 1790. The department also has a vast marriage and obituary index.
  • The PA Bureau of Vital Records, also located in downtown New Castle, maintains records of births and deaths that occurred in Pennsylvania from 1906 to the present.
  • One of the top regional community theaters is the New Castle Playhouse. Now in its 46th season, the Playhouse will feature nine performances in 2004. From Evita to a trip down the yellow brick road, the 2004 season has something for everyone.
  • The Museum of Transportation at the Harlansburg Station is located in a replica train station with four Pennsylvania passenger cares. All forms of transportation are represented including planes, trains, cars, trucks, trolleys, buses, boats and bikes.
  • Historical photos and displays of the Ellwood City area are featured at the museum of the Ellwood City Historical Society.
  • The Slovenian Heritage Center, located in the Borough of SNPJ, contains authentic costumes, Slovenian embroidery and lace, household items, agricultural tools and even an accordion or two celebrating the musical history of the tiny Eastern European country. Enjoy the artifacts of noted Polka king, Frankie Yankovic.
  • The labyrinth at Villa Maria Community Center is a spiritual journey providing reflection to those needing “time out” from their busy lives. Villa Maria’s Labyrinth is modeled after the one at Chartres Cathedral in France.
  • The Stavich Bicycle Trail, a twelve mile long trail running from New Castle, PA to Lowellville, Ohio was named in 2003 by the US Department of the Interior as a National Recreational Trail.

  • Explore seven acres containing over 500 friendly animals from all over the world at Living Treasures Animal Park. The park also features a petting and feeding areas as well as a snack and gift shop plus camel and wagon rides.
