Horseshoe Curve National Historic Landmark
Railroad engineering marvel in the Allegheny Mountains

Category:     Altoona Historic Site in Pennsylvania

Description of this Altoona Attraction: In the mid 1840's the use of steam locomotives to move people and goods westward was beginning to replace canal systems in Pennsylvania. Under the leadership of John Edgar Thompson, the Pennsylvania Railroad Company began to put railroad infrastructure across the Commonwealth, but were stopped in their tracks at the foot of the Allegheny Mountains near Altoona. In order to conquer the massive land blocks, Thompson devised an engineering plan that used the landscape and the hands of 450 Irish immigrant workers to create what is known today as the Horseshoe Curve. Opened officially on February 15, 1854, the Curve remains one of the most important components of the mainline, owned and operated by Norfolk Southern. For over 150 years the Curve has shipped freight and passengers to the west, and because of its location, the Curve offers breaktaking views of the surrounding mountain landscapes and of the valley below. It also offers trackside viewing of trains, which has made it a destination for rail lovers for decades. Since its renovation in 1992 with the help of the National Park Service, the viewing area beside the tracks of the Horseshoe Curve offers a ride on the incline to go trackside, upper and lower picnic areas, a visitors center with intrepretation and a small restaurant. In combination with its partner, the Railroaders Memorial Museum, the Horseshoe Curve helps to bring alive the celebration of 150 years of railroading in Altoona, PA.

Railroaders Memorial Museum
Interpretative museum documenting the Pennsylvania Railroad

Category:     Altoona Museum in Pennsylvania

Description of this Altoona Attraction: In its 25th year (1980-2005), the Railroaders Memorial Museum proudly interprets, documents and celebrates 150 years of railroading heritage in Altoona, PA. In 1854 when the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR) constructed and opened the Horseshoe Curve, the Allegheny Mountains were overcome and quick westward travel became available. In the valley below, the city of Altoona began to become the center of PPR operations and quickly the Railroad City became a place to do business, experience culture, shop and recreate. The Railroaders Memorial Museum offers visitors the opportunity to learn about, relive, and relish in the magnitude of the PRR's early railroad operations, and then it follows through by documenting the railroading companies that followed- the Penn Central, Conrail and Norfolk Southern. Housed in the PRR Master Mechanics Building that was built in 1883, the Museum offers a 6-acre site that is filled with indoor and outdoor intrepretation, rolling stock- including Charles Schwab's personal car the Loretto, an outdoor stage, and the Norfolk Southern active mainline at the rear for train watching. The Museum theatre offers original features throughout the day, and other vinettes are shown throughout the Museum as part of the exhibitry. For kids, the Museum offers the Thomas the Tank Engine Play Room, a full size area that has all the Thomas set-ups for kids to play with on their own. The Railroaders Memorial Museum has something of interest for the history buff, the railroad lover, the group of school students and the family.

The oldest automobile museum in America

Category:     Huntingdon Museum near Altoona, Pennsylvania

Description of this Altoona area Attraction: Nearly a century of automotive history is in store for those who come to Huntingdon, Pa. The Swigart Museum is the oldest automobile museum in America having been established in 1920 by the late W. Emmert Swigart. The selection of one-and two- cylinder cars in the Swigart Museum is probably the most diverse in the United States. Included among the exhibits are several of the most popular autos at the turn of the century. Although the collection is distinguished in its presentation of the automobile during its formative years, it also features examples of outstanding vehicles from the classic era. Famous marques represented in the collection include: Pierce-Arrow, Packard, Marmon, Duesenberg, Cord, as well as several others. The collection features many rare, and in many cases, one-of-a-kind vehicles. Each car has a history that deserves taking time for recounting. Each car is a work of art that bears testimony to a nearly-forgotten era when motor carriages were built by craftsmen.

Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area
Part of the statewide Heritage Parks Program

Category:     Altoona Tourism in Pennsylvania

Description of this Altoona Visitor Information entry: Heritage areas contain a multitude of cultural, historic, recreational, natural, and scenic resources of state and national significance that collectively exemplify the industrial heritage of Pennsylvania. Through regional partnerships and public grassroots planning strategies, these resources are identified, protected, enhanced, and promoted to strengthen regional economies through increased tourism, creation of new jobs and stimulation of public and private partnerships for new investment opportunities. The Allegheny Ridge Corporation (ARCorp) was created to manage the Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area, which was designated by the Commonwealth in 1992, in a cooperative program involving all levels of government and the private sector. The Allegheny Ridge Corporation is a private, non-profit corporation charged with developing, interpreting, and restoring the historic, cultural, and natural resources of the Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area in central/western PA (specifically Blair, Cambria, Somerset, and Huntingdon Counties). Allegheny Ridge Heritage Area will soon expand its service area to include those counties that fall within the 320-mile corridor of one of its projects. ARCorp provides numerous opportunities in economically struggling communities in central/western Pennsylvania. Through the development and promotion of various heritage- and recreation-related amenities, ARCorp projects not only improve resident quality-of-life, but also advance regional tourism. As Pennsylvania’s second largest industry, tourism can provide consistent funding to developing communities. To fulfill these goals, ARCorp has developed two projects, the Pittsburgh-to-Harrisburg Main Line Canal Greenway™ and Project RidgeRIDER™, both of which are in an intense implementation stage that will result in the development of unique recreation, conservation, and heritage development projects.
