Description of this Dayton Attraction: Dayton Aviation Heritage commemorates three exceptional men - Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright, and Paul Laurence Dunbar - and their work in the Miami Valley. Through the invention of powered flight, Wilbur and Orville made significant contributions to human history. In their Dayton, Ohio, bicycle shop these two men, self-trained in the science and art of aviation, researched and built the world's first power-driven, heavier-than-air machine capable of free, controlled, and sustained flight. The Wrights also perfected their invention during 1904 and 1905 in their hometown of Dayton. Paul Laurence Dunbar achieved national and international acclaim in a literary world that was almost exclusively reserved for whites. This gifted and prolific writer produced a body of work that included novels, plays, short stories, lyrics, and over 400 published poems. His work, which reflected much of the African American experience in America, contributed to a growing social consciousness and cultural identity for African Americans in the United States. The park is a cooperative effort between the National Park Service and four partners. The sites are The Wright Cycle Company Complex (The Wright Cycle Company bulding and the Wright-Dunbar Intepretive Center and Aviation Trail Visitor Center); Huffman Prairie Flying Field and Huffman Prairie Flying Field Intepretive Center; John W. Berry, Sr. Wright Brothers Aviation Center; and the Paul Laurence Dunbar State Memorial.

Description of this Dayton area Attraction: Built in 1895, GreatStone Castle was home to the famous and very successful Sidney Industrialist, Mr. W.H.C. Goode, one of the wealthiest men in Shelby County. Mr. Goode’s second wife, Ida Haslup Goode, was the first female principal of an Ohio high school. The castle is constructed of the finest wood and masonry available in its time and is on the National Register of Historic Places. This three story Victorian mansion features a newly added day spa in its lower level.

Historic Bear's Mill
Bear's Mill, built in 1849, is an authentic grist mill.

Description of this Dayton area Attraction: Built in 1849, Bear's Mill is an authentic example of a stonegrinding flourmill of its time. Placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975, it is still in use today to grind yellow cornmeal, soft whole wheat flour, cracked wheat and rye flour. The buhr stones are powered by water from the Greenville Creek. Everyone who comes to Bear’s Mill during business hours is welcome to take a free self-guided tour of the 4 story structure and take a walk in the scenic woods surrounding the mill. Guided tours may be scheduled for a fee. The first floor of the mill is a store and art gallery where one can purchase the mill flours and other gourmet sundries and giftware. The mill offers a line of gift boxes and custom baskets. A special feature is handmade pottery by the Bear’s Mill potters and artwork by regional artists. Bear's Mill is run by ‘The Friends of Bear’s Mill’ (a non profit organization whose mission is to preserve and keep the mill open to the public for touring and educational purposes). One of the sources of income for the mill is through store sales, so if you visit the mill and do not wish to make a purchase, please drop a gift in the donation box on your way out. It helps to keep the mill open for all to see. Louis Sullivan architectural masterpiece built in 1917

Description of this Dayton area Attraction: A Louis Sullivan architectural masterpiece built in 1917. The People’s Federal Board of Directors met with Louis Sullivan in Chicago and commissioned him to design their Bank. This building is believed to be one of the first air-conditioned buildings in the United States. Its structure and interior furnishings are much the same as they were all in their original state including the stainless steel bank vault door weighing 11 tons.

Ross Historical Center
The Ross Center is the gateway to Shelby County history.

Description of this Dayton area Attraction: The Ross Historical Center is owned and operated by the Shelby County Historical Society. The Center was built in 1902 by William Haslup, a local industrialist who owned the Sidney Steel Scraper Company, which did a prosperous business in the manufacture of steel scrapers, wheelbarrows, road graders and general road machinery. This 17-room, two-story frame home is located one block from historic downtown Sidney. The home features a monumental portico and four fluted Ionic columns on the exterior and an interior characterized by exquisite woodwork. The Ross Center’s purpose is to preserve historical resources and promote historical awareness of Shelby County. The Center is known for its revolving exhibits, computer research room, and library. The staff at the Center also conduct wonderful and enlightening tours of historic downtown Sidney.

Description of this Dayton area Attraction: The Darke County Historical Society operates Garst Museum. The main exhibit attractions are The Annie Oakley Center, Crossroads of Destiny, a large collection of memorabilia from broadcaster and world traveler Lowell Thomas, and a gallery of Currier and Ives original prints. The Annie Oakley Center was opened to the public in 2005. The center is composed of three areas: the fame and fortune hallway, Annie's family and personal life and her professional life with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. Many of the artifacts have never before been put on public display. This is the world's largest known collection of Annie Oakley memoribilia. Crossroads of Destiny is a new exhibit that opened in 2008. Beginning with a premier display of prehistoric tools, the exhibit leads the visitor into the chronicles of Anthony Wayne, Tecumseh, Little Turtle, Blue Jacket, and many other famous frontier legends that participated in the events that formed the Treaty of Greene Ville in 1795. Other exhibits within the museum collection are the Zachary Lansdowne and USS Shenandoah display, and the Lohmann Brothers telescope display. The museum also houses many early farm implements, early household appliances and other artifacts concerning early Darke County life including a large display of military uniforms dating from the war of 1812. The Darke County Genealogy library is housed within the museum containing over 5000 surname files, family histories, court records, and other records of interest to persons researching family history. Garst Museum has five wings and 33,000 square feet of exhibition galleries. You are welcome!!!

It is located in Bailey Hall, named for Francis Bailey who was the printer of the Continental Congress all 7 years in Philadelphia. He also printed the religious materials Johnny distributed throughout the midwest. The museum contains the Murdock Collection collected from 1900 up to 1960. Florence Murdock was known as the "Keeper" of the Johnny Appleseed Collection.
