Chester Historical Society 1915 Erie Station, Chester, NY
Category: Chester Museum in New York
Description of this New York Attraction: The Chester Historical Society endeavors to provide education about and the preservation of the local history of the town and village of Chester, NY and vicinity. To this end, we present public programs and operate the 1915 Erie Station as Chester's Local History Museum on the former Erie Main Line in Chester, NY about fifty miles northwest of New York City.
A few tidbits from Chester’s history:
Settled in the early 1700's.
Peter Townsend. who settled here, was one of the owners of the Sterling Iron Furnaces, where the last chain drawn across the Hudson river during the Revolutionary War was made.
It was here in Chester that the lima bean was first introduced into the United States prior the the revolution by J. Hector St. John / Michel-Guillaume Jean de Cre´vecoeur, author of “Letters from an American Farmer.”
The Yelverton Inn is perhaps the most interesting and historic place in the village. It was at this Inn, built by John Yelverton prior to 1765, that General Washington stayed on July 29, 1782, during the Revolutionary War. In the barn of this Inn some of the older inhabitants and pioneers of Orange County gathered with the nations’ two most famous lawyers, Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr in 1785 to decide the boundaries of the Cheesecock and Wawaynada patents. Also, at this Inn on September 17, 1774 a meeting of the County Delegates was called. Henry Wisner was elected and sent as a delegate to the Continental Congress at Philadelphia “to protest against unjust taxation.”
Hambletonian, progenitor of modern trotters, was born, raised, trained and buried in Chester.
First shipment of fresh milk to New York City by rail 1842 via the Erie RR.
Cream Cheese (now called Philadelphia Cream Cheese) developed and first marketed in Chester.
Early home of H.O. Oats.
Open Saturdays 9 am to 1 pm May trough October. Groups by appointment anytime. This Arts and Crafts influenced passenger station replaced the original 1841 station in 1915. After sitting in disuse for several decades, it opened on 12 June 1999 as Chester's Local History Museum. Displays include Railroad items, Chester Alumni, items from local businesses, industries, farms and families. The Ladies Waiting Room features rotating displays that change each season (1999-2000 - local items; 2001 - Milking Industry; 2002 - Chester Artists; 2003 - All Aboard to Port Jervis; 2004 - Chester: Then and Now; 2005 - Downtown Chester: Then and Now; 2006 - Young Chester Artists; 2007- Summer Fun in Chester; 2008 - Chester through the Lens; 2009- Radio Days ). The Men’s Waiting Room holds local history displays. Our gift shop is in the Ticket Agent’s Office. The Baggage Room serves a variety of purposes throughout the year. Handicap Accessible. Memberships available. The station is located in Historic Downtown, within walking distance to refreshments, restaurants, antique shops, etc. Restoration continues. . . . . . . . . . .

Frederic Remington Art Museum Parish Mansion houses Remington paintings and bronzes
Category: Ogdensburg Museum in New York
Description of this New York Attraction: Frederic Remington, the son of a Canton, New York family, achieved international renown as a portrayer of the Old West in illustrations, oil paintings, and sculptures. Despite his mother’s hope to make a businessman out of him, Remington pursued his passion to become an artist and completed over 3,000 flat works and crafted 22 subjects in bronze.
The Frederic Remington Art Museum is dedicated to collecting, exhibiting, preserving and interpreting the art and archives of this accomplished artist. The number one question asked by visitors is, "Did Remington live here?" The answer is no, but this is the place to know him best. The house that has been the center of the museum since its founding in 1923 is a place Remington surely visited on his many trips to Ogdensburg.
The depth and breadth of the museum's Remington holdings is unmatched. The great majority of items came directly from Eva Remington's 1918 estate. They include sketchbooks, endless pages of notes, photographs - even the cigars that were in his pocket before he died.
The museum’s collection includes a full spectrum of the artist’s work, including some of his earliest achievements, many published paintings and drawings, and an inspiring variety of late-life paintings, which focus on the landscape. The collection of Remington's paintings, drawings and bronzes is, of course, the most important thing we have, but it's the combination of all the elements that lets you imagine Frederic Remington here, perhaps smoking cigars and drinking whiskey into the night with any member of his circle of friends.
The Frederic Remington Art Museum is located at 303 Washington Street in downtown Ogdensburg. For hours of operation and exhibit or special event information call (315) 393-2425 or visit the website at www.fredericremington.org.
