Hillsborough's Historic Stone Arch Bridges
National Historic Structures & Civil Engineering Landmarks

Category:     Hillsboro Historic Site in New Hampshire

Description of this New Hampshire Attraction: Stone arch bridges were a solution to the weakness of timber bridges & were suited for withstanding flooding the steeply sloping NH rivers. At the time, lime mortar didn't have sufficient strength to withstand the arch stresses & didn't set in water. By a more careful cutting & fitting of stones, it was possible to make stronger stonework than could be made with lime mortar of the period; hence the development of the technique known as "dry masonry". Stone arch bridges are believed to have been the work of Scotch-Irish stonemasons who emigrated to Hillsborough, NH in the 19th century. Five of these bridges still exist in the Hillsborough area.
