Description of this Mississippi Visitor Information entry: Stories abound in the South, springing from the soil in such proliferation that even the most dedicated writer will never capture them all. Tennessee Williams tried. So did Eudora Welty. And both drew inspiration from the South's most authentically Southern city -- Columbus, Miss., founded in 1821 on the banks of the mighty Tombigbee River.
While other cities were ravaged during the Civil War, Columbus was a "hospital town," leaving the antebellum and Victorian homes -- along with their contents -- spared. Attend services in the church where ammunition was made and the roof was cut away to make soldiers' canteens. Spend an afternoon at Friendship Cemetery, home of the first Decoration Day honoring both the North and South graves. Visit three National Historic Register districts containing 676 properties, many open for tours daily. Marvel at architecture from the 1820s to present, including "Columbus Eclectic," a blend of Greek, Gothic, and Italianate styles. Savor crabmeat au gratin at J. Broussard's or eat "family-style" at Fleet's Eats -- part restaurant, part residence, completely Columbus. Swap tales with Mother Goose. Stroll the bustling Main Street, bursting with family-owned businesses, or catch an art exhibit at Rosenzweig Arts Center. Attend a play at Mississippi University for Women, be amazed by a teenage fiddle prodigy, or wile away the afternoon on a shady veranda, sipping sweet tea and listening to the lilt of jazz drifting from Catfish Alley.
White gloves optional, camera and journal recommended. The muse calls loudly here. Be prepared.
