Missouri State Museum
Category: Jefferson City Museum in Missouri
Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: The Missouri State Museum is located on the first floor of the Missouri State Capitol Building and managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources.
The Missouri Veterans Gallery opened in December 2007 and features a model of the USS Missouri and artifacts related to Missouri’s Veterans from 1821 to present day. The contents of this exhibit change on a regular basis to adequately cover all eras of Missouri’s military history and to display newly donated artifacts.
Another new addition to the Missouri State Museum is the Civil War Cannon and Diorama. This exhibit will be set up in the museum from January 15, 2009 until 2016. It features a Civil War cannon once placed on a corner of the old Missouri Capitol. Reproduction uniforms, equipment and a natural setting complete a Civil War camp diorama. A hands-on learning area will be added in Spring 2009.
In 1919, the Missouri General Assembly designated the first floor of the east wing of the Capitol as the Missouri Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Hall. Two years later, in 1921, the Missouri Resources Museum was created on the first floor of the Capitol’s west wing. The two museums were combined in 1923, and designated collectively as the Missouri State Museum. Today, the museum continues to showcase Missouri’s diverse history and resources. The museum houses both temporary and long-term exhibits, such as exhibits for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. New Civil War exhibits focus on slavery in Missouri before the Civil War and a Civil War era cannon that once sat on the Capitol grounds. One of the highlights of the museum’s collections is a significant and rare group of over 125 Civil War battle flags. Many of the flags belonged to or were captured by Missouri units on both sides of the war. At least one flag is on display at all times in the museum. Missouri was one of the most divided states during the Civil War and the Missouri State Museum exhibits tell this story.
Museum staff give guided tours of the Capitol and provide interpretive programs on a variety of subjects related to Missouri’s history and natural history. The museum also is responsible for managing Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. The Missouri State Museum is open 7 days a week, from 8am until 5pm. There is no admission fee. The only days that the State Museum is closed are the 4 major holidays (New Years Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).

Soldier's Memorial Plaza
Category: Jefferson City Historic Site in Missouri
Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: To commemorate one of the most significant and selfless acts of empowerment, inspiration, and commitment to higher education in history, Lincoln University developed, constructed and dedicated the Lincoln University Soldier’s Memorial Plaza. This monument serves as a permanent tribute to the Lincoln University founders, the brave and benevolent men of the 62nd and 65th Colored Infantries who served gallantly in the U.S. Civil War. Near the end of the Civil War, this dedicated and progressive-minded group of soldiers who served as camp laborers for Union troops recognized the need for formal education and raised nearly $6,400.00 for a school in their home state of Missouri. The soldiers of the 62nd and 65th infantries ignored racial divisions and boundaries and combined their resources to secure the initial funds for what was then known as Lincoln Institute. The presence of this memorial centerpiece on campus provides an opportunity for Lincoln University students, alumni, faculty, and friends to gather together in support and unity and also to encourage thoughtful discussions of how we can work together to further promote the mission and vision of the University.
