Carnahan Memorial Garden

Category:     Jefferson City Nature in Missouri
User Rating:

Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: The garden behind the Governor’s Mansion started in the late 1930’s as a WPA (Works Progress Administration) project. The WPA was created in 1938 by Franklin D. Roosevelt to employ the thousands of craftsmen and the laborers out of work during the great Depression. However, the project languished for the lack of funds and eventually sat idle. During the first term of Governor Phil Donnelly, Missouri’s first Lady, Mrs. Juanita ‘Flower’ Donnelly, was saddened by the abandoned project. She personally took it upon herself to restore the gardens. Through her efforts and supervision, the garden came to life with a goldfish pool, terraces and walkways and a sunken garden. It has been noted that it was common to see the Governor’s wife working on her hands and knees alongside inmates from the Missouri State Penitentiary. The Governor’s Garden was renamed in 2001 as the Carnahan Memorial Garden after the death of Governor Mel Carnahan. A beautiful site for relaxing and enjoying the beauty and smell of blooming flowers. Many use the Garden as a location for weddings. To reserve the Carnahan Memorial Garden, please call (573) 751-3249.

Cole County Historical Museum

Category:     Jefferson City Museum in Missouri

Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: Encounter the roots of Missouri government and discover the charm and culture of the early political society at the Cole County Historical Society Museum. The building stands as a historical site, built by Governor B. Gratz Brown in 1871, and today it draws visitors as a tourist attraction. The Museum’s collection of artifacts, antiques and historical documents add distinction to our county and state, thanks to the support of those who wish to preserve its historical and educational value. This is the only county museum in the country to own and display inaugural gowns of its state’s First Ladies. Across the street, the Governor’s Mansion adds to the historical grace of the Museum. The Mansion’s artwork enhances the inaugural gown collection maintained at the Museum, as impressive paintings capture the personalities of Missouri’s First Ladies shown in their inaugural gowns. An 1806 square Grand piano, made of two types of rosewood, highlights the Museum’s main drawing room. The museum is closed from December 15- February 1. Admission for adults is $3, $1 for children. Call for tour times.

Missouri State Museum

Category:     Jefferson City Museum in Missouri

Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: The Missouri State Museum is located on the first floor of the Missouri State Capitol Building and managed by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The Missouri Veterans Gallery opened in December 2007 and features a model of the USS Missouri and artifacts related to Missouri’s Veterans from 1821 to present day. The contents of this exhibit change on a regular basis to adequately cover all eras of Missouri’s military history and to display newly donated artifacts. Another new addition to the Missouri State Museum is the Civil War Cannon and Diorama. This exhibit will be set up in the museum from January 15, 2009 until 2016. It features a Civil War cannon once placed on a corner of the old Missouri Capitol. Reproduction uniforms, equipment and a natural setting complete a Civil War camp diorama. A hands-on learning area will be added in Spring 2009. In 1919, the Missouri General Assembly designated the first floor of the east wing of the Capitol as the Missouri Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Memorial Hall. Two years later, in 1921, the Missouri Resources Museum was created on the first floor of the Capitol’s west wing. The two museums were combined in 1923, and designated collectively as the Missouri State Museum. Today, the museum continues to showcase Missouri’s diverse history and resources. The museum houses both temporary and long-term exhibits, such as exhibits for the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. New Civil War exhibits focus on slavery in Missouri before the Civil War and a Civil War era cannon that once sat on the Capitol grounds. One of the highlights of the museum’s collections is a significant and rare group of over 125 Civil War battle flags. Many of the flags belonged to or were captured by Missouri units on both sides of the war. At least one flag is on display at all times in the museum. Missouri was one of the most divided states during the Civil War and the Missouri State Museum exhibits tell this story. Museum staff give guided tours of the Capitol and provide interpretive programs on a variety of subjects related to Missouri’s history and natural history. The museum also is responsible for managing Jefferson Landing State Historic Site. The Missouri State Museum is open 7 days a week, from 8am until 5pm. There is no admission fee. The only days that the State Museum is closed are the 4 major holidays (New Years Day, Easter, Thanksgiving, and Christmas).

Missouri State Penitentiary

Category:     Jefferson City Historic Site in Missouri

Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: Decommissioned in 2004, the Missouri State Penitentiary is now open to the public for hard hat tours. Before it closed, MSP was the oldest continually operating penitentiary west of the Mississippi. The prison was 100 years old when Alcatraz began taking inmates. When this prison opened in 1836, the Battle of the Alamo was going on in Texas and Andrew Jackson was in his second term. The tour showcases cells including those of famous inmates such as heavyweight champion Sonny Liston, who learned to box during his time in the big house, and James Earl Ray. Other stops on the tour are the gas chamber where 40 men and women were executed, the buried cells, several housing units and the upper yard. In 1967 the Missouri State Penitentiary was infamously named the “bloodiest 47 acres in America” by Time magazine because of the incredibly high number of serious assaults on the grounds between 1963-1964. Public tours cost $12 per person. Call the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau for available tour times.

Soldier's Memorial Plaza

Category:     Jefferson City Historic Site in Missouri

Description of this Jefferson City Attraction: To commemorate one of the most significant and selfless acts of empowerment, inspiration, and commitment to higher education in history, Lincoln University developed, constructed and dedicated the Lincoln University Soldier’s Memorial Plaza. This monument serves as a permanent tribute to the Lincoln University founders, the brave and benevolent men of the 62nd and 65th Colored Infantries who served gallantly in the U.S. Civil War. Near the end of the Civil War, this dedicated and progressive-minded group of soldiers who served as camp laborers for Union troops recognized the need for formal education and raised nearly $6,400.00 for a school in their home state of Missouri. The soldiers of the 62nd and 65th infantries ignored racial divisions and boundaries and combined their resources to secure the initial funds for what was then known as Lincoln Institute. The presence of this memorial centerpiece on campus provides an opportunity for Lincoln University students, alumni, faculty, and friends to gather together in support and unity and also to encourage thoughtful discussions of how we can work together to further promote the mission and vision of the University.
