Meeker County Historical Museum and G.A.R. Hall Historical G.A.R. Hall and County Museum
Category: Litchfield Historic Site in Minnesota User Rating:
Description of this Minnesota Attraction: We invite you to visit the Litchfield Grand Army of the Republic Hall, a rare and carefully preserved monument to the Civil War era. The G.A.R. Hall, one of the very few left in the nation and the only authentic one remaining in Minnesota, is on the National Register of Historic Places. Designed by a post member to look like a military fort, the hall was built in 1885 and was the home of Frank Daggett Post #35.
The hall has been preserved as nearly as possible in its original condition. Large framed photographs of early post members gaze solemnly from its walls. Battle maps and paintings offer visual testimony to the ordeal these veterans survived. The furniture, the alter and organ and even the color scheme are the same as on the day of the post's last meeting.
To the rear of the G.A.R. Hall , a two-story addition houses the Meeker County Historical Society Museum. This museum displays collections that depict the diverse history of Meeker County. These include Indian artifacts, an early log cabin, a blacksmith shop, household implements, early clothing fashions, tributes to United States Veterans, and more.
