Appalachian National Scenic Trail

Description of this Maine Attraction: The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a 2,174-mile footpath along the ridgecrests and across the major valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in northern Georgia. The trail traverses Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia. The Appalachian Trail (A.T.) is used by day, weekend and other short-term hikers, section-hikers and thru-hikers. Thru-hikers hike the entire length of the Trail in one season.
The A.T. began as a vision of forester Benton MacKaye and was developed by volunteers and opened as a continuous trail in 1937. It was designated as the first National Scenic Trail by the National Trails System Act of 1968. The Trail is currently protected along more than 99 percent of its course by federal or state ownership of the land or by rights-of-way. Maine Acadian Culture

Description of this Maine Attraction: Maine Acadians share beliefs and experiences tying them to a river, the land, their families, and to their common religion, languages, and history. The land borders the St. John River, flowing between the United States and Canada, and extends away from the river to the "back settlements." Here people speak Valley French, a mixture that includes old French, Quebecois, and English terms — sometimes mixed within a sentence.
Maine Acadians' French ancestors settled during the 1600s in what is now the Maritime Provinces, Quebec, and Maine. Both France and England claimed this territory. In 1755 the English government deported thousands of French neutrals from present-day Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island, then known as Acadia. Spurred by the Acadians' refusal to strengthen their pledge of allegiance to the British Crown, the authorities shipped most of them to British colonies. Some fled to Quebec. Others, today's Cajuns, sought a new start in Louisiana. The majority maintained their Acadian identity. During the 1780s Acadians settled Malecite homelands in the Saint John Valley, and here they were joined by settlers from the St. Lawrence River valley.
The National Park Service aids local efforts at cultural conservation in the Saint John Valley via the Maine Acadian Heritage Council, an association of historical societies, cultural clubs, towns, and museums that work together to perpetuate Maine Acadian culture.

Saint Croix Island International Historic Site

Description of this Maine Attraction: The National Park Service preserves Saint Croix Island International Historic site as a monument to the beginning of the United States and Canada. In 1604, Pierre Dugua(sieur de Mons), accompanied by Samuel Champlain and 77 other men, established a settlement on St. Croix Island. Preceding Jamestown (1607) and Plymouth (1620), Pierre Dugua's outpost was one of the earliest European settlements on the North Atlantic coast of North America. More specifically, it was the first attempt by the French at year-round colonization in the territory they called La Cadie or l'Acadie (Acadia). The settlement was short-lived, however, and in the summer of 1605, the French moved to a more favorable location where they established the Port Royal Habitation on the shores of the present-day Annapolis Basin, Nova Scotia.
The experience of the French on St. Croix Island taught them much about the "New World" environment and about interacting with the native peoples. From St. Croix Island, Samuel Champlain explored and charted the coast of Norembegue (Norumbega), including the Bay of Fundy and the Atlantic coast as far south as Cape Cod. The valuable insights gained from both the St. Croix settlement and further exploration formed the foundation for a more successful settlement at Port Royal, and an enduring French presence in North American continuing to the present day.

On some not-too-distant afternoon, we would like to welcome you aboard the Schooner Stephen Taber for a week's excursion away from the rush and hurry of today to the quieter, gentler ways of our sturdy, century-old sailing ship.
Each week from Memorial Day through fall foliage season, we set sail from Rockland Harbor for six days of exploring one of the most beautiful and acclaimed cruising grounds on Earth. Your adventure will be spend exploring spruce-fringed islands, gunkholing amongst secluded coves, visiting remote fishing villages, and reaching across the bay that lap the Maine coast.
From the moment you step on board, you will feel as though the clock has been turned back to a day when people extended genuine New England hospitality to everyone they met, and folks always had time to watch a sunset or a gull's silent flight.
For years, the Taber has been famous for our galley fare, and we cherish this tradition dearly. Ellen's famous New England cookery has been continually featured in the media, including New England Living, The Boston Globe, SAIL magazine, The New York Times, and The Food Network. You are sure to be dazzled by our fare, prepared with the finest fresh, local ingredients.
All of our meals including fresh daily bread and pastries, are prepared on the galley's vintage woodstove and are guaranteed to hit the spot. You'll awake every morning to sumptuous aromas, and are always welcome in the galley to visit.
We have an abiding love for the beauty and history of this area and hope you will choose to sail with us; but if you don't we look forward to seeing you out sailing with one of our friends in the fleet.
