Description of this Louisiana Attraction: Cane River Creole National Historical Park is located within the Cane River National Heritage Area in Natchitoches Parish, Louisiana. The park includes 44.16 acres of Oakland Plantation and 18.75 acres of Magnolia Plantation. The two park sites include a total of 67 historic structures remnant from 200 years of plantation life. Due to the preservation and restoration work in progress on these buildings and the grounds, limited services are available to the public. There is much work to be accomplished, and actually seeing the work in progress is an incredible opportunity that all are welcome to experience. Formal tours of Oakland Plantation are provided free of charge each day at 1:00 p.m. Self-guided tour maps are available at the Main House. Visitors are welcome to strol the grounds every day from 8:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m., on this self-guided visit. Our small, but dedicated staff will assist you if you have questions. Just look for the National Park Service uniform or nametag. The Cane River National Heritage Area extends westward from Interstate 49 to the Red River and includes everything in between. The Heritage Area's north/south boundaries are marked by the City of Natchitoches on the north side and Monette's Ferry to the south. Some of the sites in the heritage area include the Kate Chopin House and the state commemorative areas of Los Adaes, Fort Jesup, and Fort St. Jean Baptiste. Total acreage for the Heritage is approximatly 116,000 acres. The congressionally designated heritage area also includes the Natchitoches National Historic Landmark District, six other National Historic Landmarks, and the National Historical Park.

Description of this Louisiana Attraction: Cane River National Heritage Area in northwestern Louisiana is a largely rural, agricultural landscape known for its historic plantations, its distinctive Creole architecture, and its multi-cultural legacy. Historically this region lay at the intersection of French and Spanish realms in the New World. It is a place where many cultures came together to create a way of life dependent on the land, the river, and each other. Today it is home to a unique blend of cultures, including French, Spanish, African, American Indian, and Creole. The central corridor of the heritage area begins just south of Natchitoches, the oldest permanent settlement in the Louisiana Purchase, and extends along both sides of Cane River Lake for approximately 35 miles. The heritage area includes Cane River Creole National Historical Park, seven National Historic Landmarks, three State Historic Sites, and many other historic plantations, homes, and churches. While much of the roughly 116,000-acre heritage area is privately owned, many sites are open to the public.

Greenwood Plantation
Famed 1830 Revival mansion used for 7 movies

Description of this Louisiana Attraction: Greenwood Plantation built in 1830 by planter-politician W.R. Barrow, brother to Mrs. Turnbull at Rosedown Plantation. Barrow farmed cotton and sugar on 12,000 acres which the family lost at the end on the civil war. Later purchased by F. S. Percy and used as a faimly home and tourist attraction until lightning struck the home and it burned down. In l968 the current owner reconsturcted Greenwood to be just like the original. In l984 received some of the original furniture from the Barrows. Richard Barnes, the current owner has the home open to the public and has a B&B on the grounds. Used in several movies, the most popular being "North and South",

Louisiana Political Museum & Hall of Fame
Museum dedicated to preserving La.'s fascinating politics

Description of this Louisiana Attraction: The Louisiana Political Museum & Hall of Fame is located in the old L&A Railroad Depot, circa 1908. The museum opened in August of 1993 on the anniversary of Huey P. Long's 100th birthday. The museum has accumulated over 100,000 artifacts and memorabilia relating to politicians and politics in La. There are life sized mannequins of the two famous Long brothers, Huey and Earl. Much of the display has been donated to the museum by the inductees into the Hall of Fame or by their families. The inductees into the Hall of Fame are selected by a state-wide panel of political historians and writers. Each of the Inductees have their own display with a caricature drawn by famed political cartoonist Pap Dean, who is also a member of the Hall of Fame. As of 2008 there have been 114 individuals inducted into this famous Political Hall of Fame.
