Belle of Louisville / Spirit of Jefferson Historic River Boat Cruises
Category: Louisville Aquarium in Kentucky
Description of this Louisville Attraction: The Belle of Louisville is the oldest operating steamboat in the world. This year she will gracefully turn 90! She is owned by Jefferson County, Metro Louisville.
* The Belle was built in 1914 in Pennsylvania, she was named the Idlewild.
* In 1948 her name was changed to the Avalon, as the Avalon she traveled every
navigable waterway from the Missouri to the East Coast.
* In 1961 she was auctioned to the highest bidder Judge Marlow Cook & Mayor Charles Farnsley. She was towed back to Louisville in a decrepit state, and brought back to running condition by knowledgeable steamboat crew and dedicated volunteers.
The Spirit of Jefferson-
* She was built to look like a historic steamboat.
* The Spirit of Jefferson is actually a diesel-powered riverboat built in 1963 by the Dubuqe (Iowa) Boat and Boiler Company for Streckfuss Steamers, Inc.
* She was originally named the Mark Twain, & operated out of New Orleans, Louisana, as a bayou excursion boat until 1966.
* She was then brought to St. Louis, Missouri; in the early 1970's her name was changed to the Huck Finn.
* In 1995, she was purchased by Jefferson County Judge Executive, David L. Armstrong.
* The Spirit generally runs excursions from 4th & River Road. She travels up & down the Ohio River for special cruises & community events.
